Blog tour: The Kiss Thief by L.J. Shen

IMG_4637Book: The Kiss Thief

Author: L.J. Shen

Series: a standalone

Release date: 9th January 2019

Main characters: Francesca Rossi, a mob princess used as a political pawn by the men in her life. Wolfe Keaton, a senator and perhaps the devil himself. Angelo Badini, the man who hopes to make Francesca his wife.

Blurb:

They say your first kiss should be earned.

Mine was stolen by a devil in a masquerade mask under the black Chicago sky.

They say the vows you take on your wedding day are sacred.

Mine were broken before we left church.

They say your heart only beats for one man.

Mine split and bled for two rivals who fought for it until the bitter end.

I was promised to Angelo Bandini, the heir to one of the most powerful families in the Chicago Outfit.

Then taken by Senator Wolfe Keaton, who held my father’s sins over his head to force me into marriage.

They say that all great love stories have a happy ending.

I, Francesca Rossi, found myself erasing and rewriting mine until the very last chapter.

One kiss.
Two men.
Three lives.
Entwined together.

And somewhere between these two men, I had to find my forever.

Why you should read it: Oh my! Where to start? I’m a fairly recent fan of LJ Shen, so there’s a ton of books of hers that I’ve yet to read. I’ve read Dirty Headlines, Sparrow – which I adored, and now The Kiss Thief. The latter book reminds me in many ways of Sparrow – we have a spunky young heroine who finds herself in an impossible situation, due to the machinations of the men in her life. The lack of control over their own lives and the adversity both Sparrow and Francesca have to face, spoke to me and kept me reading. The anti-heroes of both books had similar character evolutions too – at first they’re surly, verging on sadistic, but little-by-little, they learn to let their guards down and show a more humane side towards the object of their desire.

The Kiss Thief is full of action, suspense and twisted sexual desire. You’ll either love it or hate it. The male characters in LJ’s back catalogue are not loveable rogues – they’re difficult, cruel but always redeemable.

What you may not like: It really depends on what you like a) in a romance and b) in a hero. As mentioned before, it you don’t like twisted, then you may struggle with this warped fairy tale. I found it engaging and thoroughly enjoyed it, however, there was a plot line towards the end which suddenly made Francesca, a hitherto sorted and sensible character (despite her age) act completely out of character. Her actions were stupid and seemed to have been engineered to cause drama. Despite this, I loved the story and couldn’t put the book down.

Rating: 4/5 for a truly heart-stoppingly good read. It was sexy, wrong in many ways, right in others! I would highly recommend it.

Blog tour: Dirty Headlines by L.J. Shen

FDC4D612-D980-4347-AC8E-5818BA78EFC7Book: Dirty Headlines

Author: LJ Shen

Series: a standalone

Release date: 7 September 2018

Main characters: Judith Humphry, plucky would-be reporter with 99 problems; Célian Laurent, successful, infuriating, rude and a thorn in Jude’s side.

Blurb:

Célian Laurent.
Manhattan royalty.

Notorious playboy.

Heir to a media empire.

…And my new boss.

I could have impressed him, if not for last month’s unforgettable one-night stand.

I left it with more than orgasms and a pleasant memory–namely, his wallet.

Now he’s staring me down like I’m the dirt under his Italian loafers, and I’m supposed to take it.

But the thing about being Judith “Jude” Humphry is I have nothing to lose.

Brooklyn girl.

Infamously quirky.

Heir to a stack of medical bills and a tattered couch.

When he looks at me from across the room, I see the glint in his eyes, and that makes us rivals.

He knows it.

So do I.

Every day in the newsroom is a battle.

Every night in his bed, war.

But it’s my heart at stake, and I fear I’ll be raising the white flag.

Why you should read it: Well! This book was hot. And rude – extremely graphic! If you like your romances sweet and gentle, this read is not for you! I enjoyed the premise – very much so. I liked Jude a lot. The poor woman has a lot of worries and luck is not on her side. Despite her desperate situation, she still manages to stay upbeat and optimistic and she has a wicked turn of phrase – not many of which I can repeat here! Her imagined conversations with Jesus are hilarious and made me laugh out loud. Her quirky obsession with her Chucks also warmed my heart. I adore Converse and would also wear them everyday if I could! The book has it all – simmering tension between the hero and heroine, family intrigue and secrets that makes the Carringtons from Dynasty look like a happy family!

What you may not like: Dare I say Célian? We all love a rogue, an ass and a jerky hero from time to time, but he really made me work at liking him. He was a total anti-hero for a good three quarters of the book. He does redeem himself by the end I think, while staying true to his surly character – so I’d say if you hang in there, you will be rewarded. The main characters are not perfect – nor did I want them to be.

Rating: 4/5 for an engaging and adult read – it’ll make you blush, fan yourself and laugh a lot. It’s definitely worth a look!

Excerpt:

He had an American accent. Not French. American. Smooth. Familiar. Ordinary. He fired out sentences at the speed of light. I heard him, but I couldn’t listen. Shock gripped my body as the pieces of the puzzle fell into place. My dirty one-night stand was my boss. My lying, American boss. And now I had to deal with that—hopefully for a very long time, because I desperately needed this job.

Someone snapped their fingers, and my gaze shot from Célian’s face to Grayson.

His forehead had crumpled into a frown. “You look like you’re trying hard not to cry or having a really intense orgasm. I’m hoping for you that it’s the latter and some kind of a weird-slash-awesome condition. You okay?”

I nodded, scraping up a smile. “Sorry. Zero orgasms happening under this dress. I just zoned out for a second.” Lies. I was about to orgasm just remembering how good Célian had felt parting my thighs with his big, callused hands and dipping his tongue into my slit.

Then words stopped streaming down on everyone’s heads like a scalding shower, and I realized that indeed there was something worse than hearing Célian speak in his perfect American English. And that was not hearing him speak at all. Because now the icicles were pointed at me like a cocked gun.

I glanced up to meet his gaze. He stared at me for exactly one second before his focus snapped to Grayson. “Am I understood, Gregory?” he asked.

Gregory?

“Crystal clear, sir,” Grayson bowed, his voice trembling at the edges.

Célian jerked his chin toward me. “Your cover girl material is going downhill.”

God. Damn. Bastard.

He recognized me, and I knew it. His eyes had kindled, melting the ice and growing darker the minute our gazes mingled. He remembered, and maybe it killed him that I was here in the same way it buried me.

I want my iPod back, my gaze told him. I had over three thousand songs on that thing, and they were all too good to be wasted on that jerk.

“Jude Humphry. Junior reporter. It’s her first day,” Grayson highlighted, almost pleadingly. He shifted in my direction, as if he might need to physically protect me from the sharp-tongued, suited monster.

I suppressed a smile when I realized I’d told Célian my last name was Spears. Well, he certainly wasn’t a Timberlake. He was a Laurent. An American monarch through and through. A billionaire, a powerful force, and judging by our one and only encounter – a raging playboy.

This man was inside you, I internally shrieked. And not just once. His cock was buried so deep in you, you screamed. You can still taste the salty, earthy flavor of his cum. You know he has a freckle on his lower back. You know what sound he makes when he empties inside a woman.

I internally thanked my mind for ruining my panties in public, and nodded. “Pleasure to meet you, sir.” I offered him my hand, my face flushing with embarrassment at my choice of words.

Everyone was looking at us, and there were at least fifty people in the room. Célian – if that was even his name – ignored my outreached hand. Instead, he turned his face to the man beside him. “Mathias, any other words of wisdom?”

Mathias? Wasn’t that his father? Just how cold was the man with the icy blue eyes?

“I think you touched everything,” said the big boss—and he did have a heavy French accent, so at least the lie had a seed. Mathias stared at me placidly, like he could read the secret his son and I shared on my face.

Célian spun toward me, uncuffing his cufflinks and rolling his sleeves up his veiny forearms. “Accounting can go back to their unfortunate line of work. Couture is excused from this meeting – though not forgiven for their horrid blog. Miss Humphry?” He snapped his fingers impatiently.

He was already waltzing down the narrow hallway, knowing I’d chase him like a puppy, and no doubt taking pleasure in that fact.

“I have a bone to pick with you.”

Bone, boner – same difference, right?

I shot Grayson a please-save-my-butt look. His eyes said, I would but I still have a life to live.

I followed Célian down the hall, my Chucks slapping the floor in a hurry. He sliced through the throng of accountants, then stopped at a corner office, opened the door, barked “Out!” to the man inside, and tilted his head for me to go in. I did. He closed the door, and it was just the two of us.

Two feet of empty space between us.

Sparrow by L.J. Shen

sparrowBook: Sparrow

Author: L.J. Shen

Series: (a standalone)

Main characters: Sparrow Reynes, our heroine who has found herself in an impossible situation. Troy Brennan, her tormentor and, oddly, her new spouse.

Troy Brennan

Every southie in Boston knows that name. The son of a dead mobster. The heart throb with steel blue eyes. “The Fixer” who can make or break you in this city.
Oh, and my new husband.

Sparrow Raynes
That’s me. No one seemed to remember my name up until he barged into my life.
But then he caged me.
Kidnapped me.
And killed every chance I had to runaway from the place where we grew up.
Put simply, Troy Brennan clipped my wings.

I have dreams, big ones, but I doubt he’d ever let me chase them. I have no idea why he’d decided to take me as his wife. But I do know this: pissing off this man will not do me any good. At all.

Why you should read it: This was such a surprising and captivating book! It was a freebie and – not being  mean, but you know how some free books are…this wasn’t like that. At all! It had it all – an engaging, suspenseful plot; a plucky heroine; a merciless and unlikeable (anti)hero – until he wasn’t. He was bad to the bone, but so complex that you’ll find a way to root for him. If that sounds messed up – read it and come back to me. There are redemptive elements there – I promise! Now, Sparrow I loved. She was plucky, brave and had a backbone of steel. She didn’t take any crap from anyone and she stood her ground. I liked her insight too.

What you may not like: As it’s set in a gangster world, expect some not-very-nice characters and themes. It’s not too bad – I’ve read much more graphic content before, so don’t be too worried about it. I really don’t have anything to hate on about it – I thoroughly enjoyed their story and how Sparrow burrows into Troy’s heart.

Rating: 4/5 for an exciting and thoroughly engaging suspenseful read. I loved every moment of it, uncovering the big secrets.

Drawn to Him – a collection

drawn to him ebook coverBook: Drawn to Him

Series: An anthology

Genre: A collection of alpha short stories

Authors: KL Krieg, Willow Winters, LJ Shen, K Webster, Isabella Starling, Jade West, A Zavarelli, M Never

Release date: 19 September 2017

Blurb:

There are some men who make you helpless.

You know the kind. They steal the breath from your lungs and make your heart beat a little faster with a single look. You can’t stop staring, but the moment they pin those gorgeous eyes on you, you’re done for.

The kind that’s too hard to resist.

This is a collection of men just like that.

Handsome, confident and all for you.

DRAWN TO HIM is a collection of eight exclusive never-before-seen novellas you can’t resist, complete with HEAs. They have all the book feels and angst you’ve been wanting.

Why you should read it: Well, do you like an alpha? An alpha who’s hellbent on having his lady at all costs? Well, this collection has 8 to choose from! Featuring the talents of Jade West, KL Kreig, Willow Winters and many more authors, you’ll be spoilt for choice. There’s something for everyone. Some stories I liked more than others – One Night, by KL Kreig, among one of my favourites. In this particular story, we have the heroine – Saine, still hung up on her ex, forced to endure attending his wedding to someone else. Her meeting with a mysterious stranger is the kind of comfort she didn’t know she needed. Spooked by their intense night together, she steals away in the middle of the night, sad to leave but resolved that she’ll never see him again. Oh how wrong she is…

What you may not like: As with many collections or anthologies, the quality differs per story – I think for some authors, it may be harder to develop the characters so quickly, (within 8 or 9 chapters) while keeping the action moving at a steady pace. Some stories were cute, some a bit odd – with an over the top hero being a bit ridiculous and others were satisfying quick reads. Some had a hard edge to them – a violence that I wasn’t particularly a fan of, and a bit porny if I’m honest. However – I do believe there’s something for everyone.

Rating: As One Night was my favourite, I’ll give it 4/5. For the collection as a whole, it’s more like 3/5.
