Teasing the Princess by Nana Malone

Teasing-the-Princess-web

Book: Teasing the Princess

Series: Royals United #2

Author: Nana Malone

Release date: 8 January 2019

Main characters: Roone Ainsley, best friend to the king and sent to protect Jessa McLean, the ‘lost’ princess. Jessa McLean, successful and savvy PR guru, who’s unfortunately used to having her life turned upside down.

Plot: Jessa is once again fleeing the only home she knows. This time however, she’s determined to get some answers and to find out once and for all who her enemies and who her allies are.  She won’t think about Roone and his deception – it hurts too much. She resolves to head straight into the eye of the storm – she’s heading for the Winston Isles and the source of all her trouble.

Roone knows he’s blown his chance with Jessa – but he couldn’t disobey a direct order from the king. He’s resolved to find Jessa, make her see sense and maybe one day she’ll be able to forgive him for his deception. He just has to find her first and keep her safe…

Why you should read it: if you read and enjoyed (and you should have read it first)  Royal Tease, you’ll know what a doozy of a cliffhanger it ended on. I was dying to read what would happen next – Jessa was such a badass! If you felt for Roone, then you need to read on to see what happens to him. The dialogue was punchy and the plot didn’t drag – it moved along nicely and each page was exciting and a delight. I also enjoyed the peripheral characters who appeared in the other Royals series – I love them and their realness and the multiple points of view weren’t at all jarring.

What you may not like: I’m not sure really. There was A LOT going on in the book and with so many characters involved, you may need to jog your memory a bit on past plots and character references – it wasn’t a big deal though. I thoroughly got caught up in the action and went with it! I was rewarded with an exciting and satisfying read. I totally recommend it.

Rating: 4/5 for a truly enjoyable read for the holidays – it was just what I needed.

The Tycoon by M. O’Keefe

The TycoonBook: The Tycoon

Series: King Family #1

Author: M. O’Keefe

Release date: 12 July 2018

Main characters: Clayton Rorick, successful businessman determined to make his mark. Veronica King, daughter of the not-so-great magnate Hank King, and unwitting pawn in his games.

Blurb:

The cruel and beautiful man who ruined my life has everything he wants—everything except me.

Five years ago, Clayton Rorick loved me. Or so I thought. Turned out he only wanted to get his hands on my daddy’s company. Heartbroken, I ran away with nothing but the clothes on my back. Like a twisted Cinderella. When my father dies, leaving my sisters in a desperate situation, it’s up to me to help them.

I’ll have to beg the man who broke my heart to save us.

But Clayton hasn’t forgotten me and what he wants in exchange for his help is…my body, my heart and my soul.

Why you should read it: Oh My goodness! I freaking loved this book –  I really will read anything by Molly O’Keefe, because she never disappoints. I loved Ronnie so much – the way she keeps what’s left of her family together, how she picked herself up and wasn’t a victim, and how she protects her heart from the man who destroyed it. Her attitude and her moxie were pitch perfect – she knew when to run and when to stay and fight.

Clayton made me go awwwww. He’s a powerful man, but deep down he’s still got a lot of growing up to do. I don’t mean he was immature, I just mean that he needed to fully develop his heart and his capacity for relationships. He started off enigmatic and you’re not quite sure of his motivations, but then we get to know him, and I admit that I fell for him – just a little bit! I loved the gentle humour in the book – for example:

“Listen to me,” she begged. “Please. You’re forgetting what it was like because you’re drunk on sex. But this guy lied to you. Over and over again. I’m telling you as a person who’s had way too much experience with liars—he won’t stop.”

“He had his reasons and they were complicated.” I said. I hadn’t explained Clayton’s relationship with his father except to tell her that Dale made our father look like Mr. Rogers. “He’s kind of like a feral cat. I’m just trying to get him up on the porch.”

“You’re comparing your fiancé to a feral cat in an effort to convince me to approve?” she asked.

“Well, you’re a little feral yourself.”

What you might not like: Not sure – it’s short – it left me wanting more. There are two more books in the series written by S. Doyle and Julie Kriss – just look at those beautiful covers! I think it’s a great concept for each author to take a different story, focusing on a different family member – it will be interesting to see how those stories mesh together.

Rating: 4/5 for an intriguing, page-turning, sexy read! A great series to get into on your holidays.

Sugar Sweet by Christine d’Abo

cover141686-mediumBook: Sugar Sweet

Series: Sugar series #1

Author: Christine d’Abo

Release date: 7 August 2018

Main characters: Marissa Roy, student struggling with debt caused by a vengeful ex. Vince Taylor, multimillionaire with a reputation for being an ass.

Blurb:

Connecting with a sugar daddy is reserved for a certain kind of woman. But some men make you yearn to be that kind of woman . . .
Marissa Roy never thought she would do it. Until she finds herself overwhelmed by debt, college costs—and a vengeful ex-boyfriend determined to ruin her financially. But once she meets multi-millionaire Vince Taylor, the thought of sleeping with her hot benefactor is a major turn-on. Except Vince has one condition to their dating contract: he wants her by his side, but not in his bed. Finding sex was easy, he said, finding someone he could trust was not. Still, his hungry gaze tells Marissa otherwise . . .

She’s the perfect escort—a natural beauty with the kind of savvy discretion that will keep his personal life out of the tabloids. Only Vince doesn’t expect his body to pulse every time Marissa steps into the room, every time she stands close. Too close.  He doesn’t expect to find himself pulling her into his arms, night after night after night. Suddenly he can’t get enough of her intoxicating body. And once he’s broken that rule, it’s only a matter of time until he violates his vow to never, ever fall in love…

Why you should read it: This was a surprising read. I thought I knew what it would be like: a girl, practically forced to auction off her love, time etc. in order to make ends meet. A millionaire, who happens to be attractive, would treat her like his plaything until he realises she’s the one. It wasn’t like that. At all. There was a pragmatic heroine, who is in serious dire straits, and needs money. Fast. So far so trope, right? However, the characters had an engaging sense of humour and a no-sex clause, that forces them to get to know each other as people. It was refreshing. Marissa isn’t immature – she can’t afford to be. She goes into every situation with her eyes open and she owns her decisions. I really liked her. Vince was supposed to be an ass, but he’s not the worst hero you’ll ever meet. He has a conscience, a moral compass of sorts – I really liked him!

What you may not like: You may take issue with the premise and dismiss it as like all the other books, but I think you’ll find something engaging in it. I really do.

Rating: 4/5 for a fun and touching read. I loved the dialogue and the author’s ability to find some originality in this well-known trope.

Blog tour: Survival of the Richest by Skye Warren

A woman gazes at the camera. She is dressed in red underwearBook: Survival of the Richest

Series: Trust Fund #1

Author: Skye Warren

Release date: 12 June 2018

Main characters: Harper St. Claire, heroine of the story, who’s tired of being controlled. Christopher Bardot, her former stepbrother and the only thing standing in the way of her accessing her trust fund. Sutton Mayfair, Christopher’s business partner and love rival.

Blurb:

An heiress without a cause.
Two billionaires determined to claim her.
And a war fought on the most dangerous battlefield – the heart.

My story starts with a plunge into the cold water of Manhattan’s harbor.

A strong hand hauls me back onto the deck of the luxury yacht. Christopher was supposed to be my enemy. Instead he protects me with fierce determination.

That should have been my happily ever after, but then Sutton appeared – ruthless and seductive. He doesn’t care that my heart belongs to someone else, because he’s determined to win. No matter the cost.

It’s an impossible choice, but I can’t have them both.

Why you should read it: Oh my goodness! As you may know, I’m a huge fan of Skye Warren’s work, and Survival of the Richest is no exception. I don’t often bother with love triangles, but I was really in the mood for one and then I heard about this book. So timely! The plot was engaging and full of twists and turns – Harper is in a difficult situation thanks to her controlling father and rather than roll with it, she’s prepared to fight every step of the way. I liked her spirit and her sense of fun. The chemistry between her and Christopher bubbled away in the background, but it was the brash, southern charm of Sutton who grabbed my attention. He was wicked and sexy and all those things you should probably stay away from if you want a quiet life! Yes, I want to know what his deal is and what his endgame will be. I thought this was a standalone, so I was surprised when it ended the way it did. Thankfully, there won’t be long to wait for The Evolution of Man, which is out in August – so not too long to wait.

What you may not like: This book isn’t a typical love triangle. Then again, Skye Warren isn’t your average or typical writer. There’s always a side of danger or darkness in the background. If that’s not your bag and you’re averse to a heroine enjoying the company of more than one man at a time, then this book may overload your puritanical senses! I thoroughly enjoyed not knowing who, if anyone, she’ll choose. Or will she have a choice?

Rating: 5/5 – I want more and I want it now! Please.

Excerpt

She was standing at the bar, sipping what looked like a scotch or bourbon or whiskey as she scanned the room. Most women I’d met didn’t like strong alcohol, though, so I was sure I had to be wrong. I moved up next to her—not too close, not too far away—and signaled the bartender. As he moved my direction, I said, “Large Laphroaig. On the rocks.”

“Ten year?” the bartender asked.

“Eighteen.”

A nervous look crossed the bartender’s face. “That’s a very rare bottle, sir. I’m not sure we have that.”

“I’m sure you do,” I responded in my practiced Spanish accent. “I’ll wait while you find it.”

Beside me, the blonde lifter her auburn brow that didn’t match her hair color and sipped her drink, continuing to look out over the crowd of people drinking, laughing, flirting—some even dancing to the low, sultry beat of some jazz. Umber I didn’t recognize.

The bartender disappeared into a back room and returned several minutes later with a bottle in his hand. “Turns out we did have it.”

Shocker. The masters of the universe running this masquerade didn’t drink the cheap shit themselves.

The bartender added ice to a glass and began pouring. Beside me, the blonde’s perfume—something that included gardenias, my favorite flower—drifted to my nose. Another enticement I couldn’t refuse.

I pulled a generous tip from my wallet and set it on the gleaming wood as the bartender handed me my glass.

“Thank you, sir,” he said in his clipped British accent.

I lifted the glass to my lips and took a large sip. As the bartender moved to help someone else, the blonde said, “A whisky connoisseur. That or you were just trying to see how cheap our host is.”

I smirked and turned toward her. “They always hide the good stuff.”

“Sounds as if you know from experience.”

Her accent was very posh. And very un-commoner. A dead giveaway she was from the upper British crust and not the mind-washed kitten she was pretending to be.

“Here?” I worked to accentuate my own accent so she wouldn’t realize where I was really from. “But at rich parties like this, they always keep the good stuff hidden.”

I offered my hand. “Marc Garcia. I’m in the computer business.”

I figured that was a boring enough cover. And a partial truth to my name would keep me out of trouble.

“Computers, hmm?” Her silky fingers slid over mine for a split second before disappearing way too fast. “What are you doing here, Mr. Garcia?”

There was definite interest in her eyes. I hadn’t been wrong earlier when I’d thought she was checking me out. The little minx was as attracted to me as I was to her. She was just working hard to hide it.

But I could also tell from the spark of curiosity in her eyes that she was feeling me out, trying to discover just what House Castellano in Spain was doing at this party. Most of the attendees were from House Merrick in the UK. A few from House Richelieu in France. No other Houses had been invited.

“One of my British business associates invited me. We’re negotiating a big deal on some, well”—I purposely acted evasive just like a jackass newbie making shady deals with these people would act—“surveillance software. I think he was hoping this party would persuade me to accept his offer.” I glanced over the masked couples and frowned as I sipped my drink. “Afraid to say, it’s really not all that exciting from where I’m sitting, though.”

She smirked and lifted her glass to her lips. “And what do you find exciting, Mr. Garcia?”

Blood rolled through my veins and gathered in my groin as I pinned my eyes on her. “Very proper British women who eye-fucks strangers across the room and act shocked and dismayed when they’re called out for it.”

For a heartbeat, she didn’t respond, then slowly swallowed what was left in her glass and turned my way. “I wouldn’t dream of appearing shocked and dismayed.”

Sparrow by L.J. Shen

sparrowBook: Sparrow

Author: L.J. Shen

Series: (a standalone)

Main characters: Sparrow Reynes, our heroine who has found herself in an impossible situation. Troy Brennan, her tormentor and, oddly, her new spouse.

Troy Brennan

Every southie in Boston knows that name. The son of a dead mobster. The heart throb with steel blue eyes. “The Fixer” who can make or break you in this city.
Oh, and my new husband.

Sparrow Raynes
That’s me. No one seemed to remember my name up until he barged into my life.
But then he caged me.
Kidnapped me.
And killed every chance I had to runaway from the place where we grew up.
Put simply, Troy Brennan clipped my wings.

I have dreams, big ones, but I doubt he’d ever let me chase them. I have no idea why he’d decided to take me as his wife. But I do know this: pissing off this man will not do me any good. At all.

Why you should read it: This was such a surprising and captivating book! It was a freebie and – not being  mean, but you know how some free books are…this wasn’t like that. At all! It had it all – an engaging, suspenseful plot; a plucky heroine; a merciless and unlikeable (anti)hero – until he wasn’t. He was bad to the bone, but so complex that you’ll find a way to root for him. If that sounds messed up – read it and come back to me. There are redemptive elements there – I promise! Now, Sparrow I loved. She was plucky, brave and had a backbone of steel. She didn’t take any crap from anyone and she stood her ground. I liked her insight too.

What you may not like: As it’s set in a gangster world, expect some not-very-nice characters and themes. It’s not too bad – I’ve read much more graphic content before, so don’t be too worried about it. I really don’t have anything to hate on about it – I thoroughly enjoyed their story and how Sparrow burrows into Troy’s heart.

Rating: 4/5 for an exciting and thoroughly engaging suspenseful read. I loved every moment of it, uncovering the big secrets.

Blog tour – Forbidden by Elisabeth Naughton

FORBIDDEN high res coverBook: Forbidden

Series: House of Sin #1

Author: Elisabeth Naughton

Release date: 24 April 2018

Main characters: Natalie James, woman on a mission to find out how her best friend died; Luciano Salvatici, enigmatic CEO of Covet, a successful magazine and keeper of dark secrets.

I’ll leave tomorrow if that’s what you really want me to do, Luc. I won’t fight you on it. I just hope…” She hesitated and looked down at where I held her, but when her eyes slid back to mine, I saw the dampness in her gaze. “I hope someday someone makes you see yourself the way I see you. I’m just sorry it couldn’t be me.” She gently pulled her hand from my grip, and I let her because I suddenly couldn’t breathe.

Plot: Natalie James has taken time out of her safe, small-town existence to find out exactly what drove her friend Elena to a drug overdose. Something doesn’t add up – she knows her friend and drugs were never her vice.

She plans to infiltrate Covet, the magazine Elena worked for, but she has to get through to the intractable Luciano Salvatici first. He’s intimidating, dismissive and he sees right through her ruse. She’ll have to find another way. But how? Natalie’s mission will take her on a mysterious and possibly deadly journey and she will have to get closer to Luc. Does she stand to lose more than her heart in such a dangerous game of cat and mouse?

Why you should read it: I love Elisabeth Naughton – she really does romantic suspense so, so well. This story is full of intrigue, sex and adventure. I really didn’t know where the story was headed and was happy to give myself over to the storyline completely. The dual point of view narrative gave a greater insight into each character and the reader is left in no doubt about who they are as people. I was rooting for them but I couldn’t see how they would extricate themselves from the tangled web of deceit.

What you might not like: This is a trilogy. You should know this going in. There will be cliffhangers and a slight gap in between book releases. If you don’t mind waiting then start this series as soon as possible! It’s steamy, it’s sweet and it’s suspenseful. If not, maybe wait until the series is complete (June 2018).

Rating: 4/5 for a strong start to the series. I have questions, I want to know what will happen next and I’m totally invested in Natalie and Luc.

**WARNING!**

The Worst Best Man by Lucy Score

A man wears a custom-made tux - his face isn't visible above the lipsBook: The Worst Best Man

Author: Lucy Score

Series: a standalone

Main characters: Franchesca Baranski, an ambitious graduate, maid of honour, struggling with the reality of having rich friends. Aiden Kilbourn, arrogant, CFO of his family business and obnoxious best man to their mutual friends.

Blurb:

The bride is a doll. The groom is the perfect gentleman. But the rest of the wedding party? They’re the stuff of nightmares. Rich? Check. Vapid? Double Check. Entitled? Not enough checks in the world. And the Best Man? More like the Worst Man.

But Maid of Honor Franchesca takes her duties seriously. Kidnapped groom? She’s got this. Rude attendees? You just watch her handle them. So a best man with a big attitude and an even bigger…checkbook? Yeah, there’s no way she’s going to let that pretentious, judgmental jackhole ruin her best friend’s wedding. No matter how sexy he is. (Well, that’s the plan anyway…)

Aiden Kilbourn doesn’t do long-term relationships. He’s busy ruling the business world, and has yet to find a woman he can tolerate for longer than a month, two at the outside. Conquering the unconquerable is basically his bread and butter. And he hasn’t met a challenge that he can’t win. But Franchesca Baranski? This smart-mouthed girl from Brooklyn may just be his downfall.

Why you should read it: Oh my goodness – it’s been a while since I’ve read a book that entertained me this much! Prepare for my gushing…The dialogue was SUPERB. It was razor sharp, made me guffaw (right, who the hell guffaws these days?) out loud and the sexual chemistry was INSANE. In places, it reminded me of an old-time screwball comedy, and I imagined Aiden at times as a modern Cary Grant. I loved Frankie’s wit, her camaraderie and the fact that she refused to be less than she was. She sticks up for herself and takes crap from no-one. Yet at the same time, she makes mistakes and isn’t perfect and I loved that too. Aiden – what can I say? He gave as good as he got, but also had hidden depths beneath the insouciant demeanour. He’s got it bad for Frankie and is kept on his toes throughout the book. I loved the banter, the romance and the family intrigue on the side.

What you might not like: You like romance? Strong heroines? Cocky heroes, with vulnerability? If the answer to any of these questions is YES, then I think you’ll love it. If you don’t, let me know.

Rating: Easy – 5/5 – I’d give it more if I could. And I don’t write that often enough!

Quickie review: The Princess Trap by Talia Hibbert

38336731

Book: The Princess Trap

Author: Talia Hibbert

Release date: 8 February 2018

Main characters: Cherry Neita, HR professional, who’s good at getting what she wants. Prince Ruben of Helgmøre, the complex prince who’s heart is stolen the minute he meets Cherry.

Blurb:

Prince Ruben of Helgmøre knows exactly what he wants—and his current obsession is Cherry Neita.

Everything from her rollercoaster curves to her fearsome attitude commands his attention.

And best of all? She has no idea who Ruben is.

Until the paparazzi catch them in a dark alley, her scarlet lipstick smudged, and his hands somewhere naughty…

All Cherry wanted was a night or two with the hottest man she’d ever seen. Turns out, that man is actually a prince, and now he needs her to play princess.

Well, princess-to-be. One year as his fake fiancée, and he’ll make all her problems disappear. Easy. Right?
Wrong.
The closer Cherry gets to Ruben, the brighter their passion burns. But the royal family hides dark secrets, and their palace is a diamond-studded trap.

Can true love bloom from false beginnings? Or will this fairytale end in a happy-never-after?

Why you should read it: I’m not usually one for fairytales and the whole royalty-themed trope has gone stratospheric recently, but this story is well worth reading. It manages to deal with the opulence and luxury of royalty in a down-to-earth way that makes the unbelievable believable. It doesn’t read like wealth porn – which is refreshing. We have a strong heroine who gets inveigled into a situation that is not her making and we see how she deals with it and how her behaviour contrasts with Ruben’s. There is plenty of spot-on dialogue that will have you laughing and turning the page. It’s full of sexual tension and it made my toes curl. Ruben is a great character – he’s permanently wrong footed by Cherry – she has him tied up in knots, and all he wants is to deserve her. Who wouldn’t love a sexy, put together woman? He’s very vulnerable despite, or even because of his status. I couldn’t help but love him.

What you may not like: As I said, if you’re not into the royalty trope then you may not be turned on to this book, but give it a try, you won’t be disappointed. I have read samples of other royalty-themed books and tapped out almost immediately. This isn’t one of those.

Rating: 5/5 for a highly entertaining, at times very touching read. Made me want to head straight for Scandinavia!

Burn For You by J.T. Geissinger

492F81E3-1FCA-4507-A6C7-B5985DF5379DBook: Burn for You

Series: Slow Burn #1

Author: J.T. Geissinger

Release date: 17 October 2017

Main characters: Bianca Hardwick, restaurant owner, who’s struggling with the pressures of work and home life. Jackson Boudreaux, surly heir to the local bourbon-making empire.

Plot: Bianca Hardwick is busy running her restaurant and creating the perfect menu, but she’s barely breaking even. The menu is a labour of love, inspired by the region’s renowned bourbon – had she known what the consequences of using the Boudreaux bourbon name would be, she maybe would have thought twice.

Jackson Boudreaux is aware of Bianca Hardwick’s labour of love and as it concerns his legacy, he wants to find out whether her cooking passes muster. Unfortunately, his manner leaves a lot to be desired – he’s demanding, rude and takes no prisoners. He immediately puts Bianca on her guard, and pushes all of her buttons. She’s determined to best him any way she can. So begins a battle of wits, where Bianca endeavours to teach the beast some manners. However, far from being predictable, Jackson once again manages to take her by surprise when he proposes a marriage of convenience that will benefit them both immeasurably. Bianca knows that marrying Jackson would be anything but convenient…

Why you should read it: This is my first book by J.T. Geissinger (I know, I must have been under a rock) and I was not disappointed. It was so funny – packed full of fun characters, the New Orleans vibe, a plucky and headstrong heroine and a surly, yet vulnerable hero – I absolutely loved it! The chemistry between Jax and Bianca was off the hook and the slooooow burn was delicious. Just enjoy the ride – it was touching, entertaining and gave me a warm feeling inside. Think of it as a modern retelling of the Beauty and the Beast story – but there’s no Gaston, so it’s all good! It’s not all laughs though – there’s a fair amount of teary moments too – so have your hankies ready.

What you may not like: I was sad when it finished! But that’s the mark of a damn good story. I will definitely re-read – I may even buy the audiobook!

Rating: 5/5 – a great read to kick off the new year.
