BLOG TOUR: Sexy as Sin by Julie Kriss

Book: Sexy as Sin

Series: Filthy Rich #2

Author: Julie Kriss

Release date: 3 December 2019

Main characters: Ava Winters, fashion stylist and Aidan Winter’s sister; Dane Scotland, Aidan’s best friend and co-founder of Tower VC group.

Blurb:

The assignment should be a fashion stylist’s dream. Dane Scotland—brilliant programmer, millionaire, partner in my brother’s company—is going to a big-money meeting, and he needs to look the part.

The problem? Dane doesn’t want a makeover. He’s grumpy and reclusive, and his wardrobe consists of two pairs of old jeans. He doesn’t want me anywhere near him.

Did I mention that he’s my brother’s best friend? And that no one knows exactly what Dane and I got up to ten years ago?

The nerd I knew is gone—Dane ditched his glasses and bulked up. Now he’s six-foot-plus of hot genius, but I can be professional. I can definitely keep my hands off him. Again.

But when he looks at me like he used to, like no one else ever has, the only thing I want is to lose control.

Dane and I gave each other our first taste of heartbreak. Are we destined for another round?

Why you should read it: my, my, my! This series keeps getting better and better, hotter and hotter! I loved Filthy Rich for its dialogue and characters with depth and Sexy as Sin is no different. Dane and Ava have history – and this makes their story so intriguing and hot. There’s pathos, there’s pain and there’s yearning. I loved this story and I devoured it in hours. Ava is damaged but not broken. She’s determined to sort out her life before pursuing anything with Dane. Dane is a pretty straightforward character. He hides his vulnerability under his surly exterior, but he feels plenty. What can I say? I didn’t want the book to end!

Dane’s arm came around my waist and a growl came from his throat. He’d never made that sound before—possessive, primal, male. I shivered at the sound of it. But his free hand came down over mine, stopping its progress. “You know what I want,” he said roughly, his voice low. “You, in a bed. All mine. No one around and no time limits. So I can do anything to you I want, for as long as I want.” He let go of me, slid back, his heat leaving me. “Nothing else will ever fucking do.” And with that, Dane stood and silently left the room.

What you may not like: It was over too quickly! Nah, it was just right. I don’t have a single negative thing to say about this story. Just bring on more of this stellar series!

Rating: 5/5 for a truly enjoyable read. Next up is Samantha’s sister Emma and bad boy Noah’s story in Dirty Talk

Blog tour: London Soul by Nana Malone

Book: London Soul

Series: London Royal #2

Author: Nana Malone

Release date: 19 November 2019

Main characters: Abena Nartey, upcoming photography student, struggling to get away from her controlling family. Alexi Chase, her smitten paramour, and super rich royal, harbouring deep secrets.

Blurb:

Before her, I was:

Rich.
Entitled.
A possessive pain in the ass.

Who am I kidding? I still am.

Love wasn’t for me.
I’d come to terms with that a long time ago.

And then I met her. I was this close to freedom. But one look at her and I was caught in a web I couldn’t escape. One I didn’t want to escape.

But then someone took her from me. Now they’ll find out just how far I’m willing to go to get her back.

To save the woman I love, all I need to do is expose my secrets. Secrets that will have consequences for her and the crown.

Why you should read it: You may remember that cliffhanger at the end of London Royal? Well, the action picks up right from where book 1 left off. Abbie and Alexi go through the mill in this book – so many obstacles, and misunderstandings and misplaced loyalty means one thing: DRAMA! It was exciting and the action and plot did not wane – it certainly kept me reading. Abbie develops quite a bit in this story – she’s skittish for very good reason and wary of Lexi at the start of the story, but by degrees, the pair come to trust each other and work on their personal issues. I empathised with Abbie – she’s doing the best she can and she really has a dreadful family! Lexi is in foreign territory in his feelings for Abbie – he has competing priorities and he really has a lot to sort through. Seeing how he navigates his way through friendships and family was interesting and also quite sad.

What you may not like: I think all in all, Nana Malone acquitted herself well re-versioning this story into the Royal environment. Fans of the Chase brothers will really enjoy their new world and the continuing story to include Xander and his adventures. I’ll admit, I was a bit sceptical as I enjoyed the original series and thought why mess with perfection? However, there was some new plot and new content to enjoy.

Rating: 3.5/5 for a good read – lots of drama, lots of angst, and plenty of sexual chemistry! Looking forward to more Chase brothers.

BLOG TOUR: London Royal by Nana Malone

Book: London Royal

Series: London Royal duet #1

Author: Nana Malone

Release date: 22 October 2019

Main characters: Abena Nartey, budding photography student; Alexi Chase, a maybe-royal, hell-bent on forging a future where he’s not under his father’s control.

Plot: Abbie Nartey has begun to lose sense of who she is. Once spunky and vibrant, she’s become cowed and cautious. Having given in one too many times to a controlling and violent partner and her strict Ghanaian parents, Abbie decides enough is enough. After rejecting the career her parents believed appropriate, she arrives in London, having won a place on a prestigious photography degree. She’s scared, and is unsure of the future, but she has two friends on whom she can rely.

Alexi Chase is young, handsome, rich and bored. Bored of his social circle, bored of living under his father’s thumb. He has one shot to gain his freedom and he plans to take it. Meeting Abbie knocks him on his ass – literally. Despite the mutual attraction, Abbie is determined to stay boyfriend-free in London, as her last relationship was a disaster. Alexi believes he’ll never be able to form a fulfilling relationship due to the childhood secrets that still haunt him and only his brother knows about. So friends it is. Only friends don’t share kisses that literally rock their world…

Why you should read it: If the story sounds familiar, then it’s because these characters were first introduced back in the halcyon days of 2014. London Bound forms the basis on London Royal with some key changes complete with twists and turns here and there. I’m assured that book 2 London Soul will take these two characters to new places and new situations. The chemistry between Lex and Abbie is how I remembered it. It’s palpable and the sexual tension really gets ramped up to the max by the end of the book. Lex is a smitten kitten, but will his secrets come back to bite him?

What you may not like: I’m not sure. On the one hand, we’re revisiting a familiar pair of characters – if you read the book before will this enhance or reduce your enjoyment? I really don’t know – I’m conflicted about it to be honest. On the plus side, we’re getting more Lex and Abbie. I love them as characters and I love that we’ll get to read about them in exciting and dangerous settings. I can’t wait to see Lex unleash his alpha instincts!

Rating: 4/5 for a nice trip down memory lane and quite the cliffhanger!

Review: Half Truths by Claire Contreras

Half Truths AMAZONBook: Half Truths

Author: Claire Contreras

Series: a standalone (so far)

Release date: 21 October 2019

Main characters: Amelia Bastón, Ellis university student desperate to find her way in life outside of her family’s influence; Logan Fitzgerald, star hockey player, and thorn in Amelia’s side from day one.

Blurb:

You’ve heard of these groups – the secretive ones that only the crème de la crème are invited into, the ones outsiders speculate about for centuries – I’m the second in my family invited to attend, but to them, I’m fresh meat. New blood. New money, too.

They think they’ll elbow past me, that I’m here for their amusement, for them to walk all over, they’ll find out soon enough that I’m not.
I may look like one of them, with my designer bags and clothes straight from the Parisian runways, but I’m not. I’m here for answers, to take revenge for blood spilled on their centuries-old Persian rugs.

I transferred here in search for answers about what happened to my older brother, who hightailed out of here, and my friend who seemingly disappeared into thin air. I certainly wasn’t here for the attention of the star hockey player, regardless of how much he willed my eyes his way. I wasn’t here for his scrutiny or his judgement or to read into his mysterious aura. I was here for the society, because only they held the answers I needed. That was, until I found out that in order to get those answers, I needed to go through him. He’s saying if I want in, I have to play by their rules, follow their lead.

It’s a game I’m willing to play.
I may be the second person I know of to be invited into their society, but I’ll be the first to make it out intact.

Why you should read it: Claire Contreras has a wonderful narrative style. Her books have the right blend of angst, sexual chemistry and an intricate side plot running through it. Contreras has embarked on a different subgenre and this book has been billed as romantic suspense – a sub-genre I love when done well.

The book’s setting is intriguing. A college whose students sit in the lap of luxury and where the country’s most powerful offspring belong to secret societies, doing who knows what. All the ingredients for a suspenseful tale are there. There are enigmatic characters who try to befriend Amelia, but their purpose isn’t always clear. Another key ingredient. Then there’s Logan, the love interest. He’s a big man on campus with a bright future in front of him. He seems to delight in antagonising her, but at the same time, can’t seem to leave her alone. The key elements are all there, and there were some truly exciting moments in the book – in particular, towards the end of the book.

What you may not like: I have to be honest, it took me a long while to get into this story. Why? Perhaps because so much of the book was setting the scene, I wanted action quicker than it actually occurred. Then there was Amelia. She’s young – I get that, but a lot of the time she came across as whiny and she really knew how to labour a point. Much of her inner monologue was repetitive and at times, I wanted to shake her. I’m used to punchy dialogue from Contreras’s heroines but Amelia really didn’t have a lot to say for herself that added value or gravitas to a given situation. Her dialogue with Logan was supposed to be flirtatious and at times combative, but again, it just didn’t land for me.

Logan as a character wasn’t entirely convincing either, until the latter portion of the book. So much of the book featured them circling each other, giving very little away, that by the time the exciting ending came, it was over in a few pages. I found this really disappointing as just as we were getting a handle on the characters and how they interacted with each other, it was over.

Rating3/5 for a solid and promising effort in a new genre, but some pacing issues hampered the book’s progress for me.

Blog tour: One Woman by Lisa Renee Jones

81ACA9F9-8629-453C-94AB-51F15595BA9EBook: One Woman

Series: The Naked Trilogy #2

Author: Lisa Renee Jones

Release date: 17 September 2019

Main characters: Emma Knight, daughter to the late business tycoon who founded Knight hotels. Jax North, successful businessman in his own right, once hellbent on revenge, now hopelessly in love with Emma Knight – his family’s enemy.

Blurb:

The second book in the dangerously sexy Naked Trilogy by New York Times bestselling author Lisa Renee Jones.
Emma and Jax came together in the midst of secrets and lies, but in a castle in Maine, they seek passion and sanctuary. What they find is a mystery that could stretch beyond all their expectations. And what Emma finds is danger.

One Woman begins where One Man ended, with Emma one step from death and Jax the only man who can save her

“We’re not them,” he says, his thumb stroking my cheek. “They don’t decide who we are or what we are together.”

Why you should read it: Having loved One Man as much as I did, it was a no-brainer that I’d want to devour One Woman. Book one ended on a doozy of a cliffhanger, and book two got straight back into the action. There was also the very useful recap of book one’s plot for those who aren’t reading the trilogy in one go. That was a nice touch, as I’ll admit I totally forgot little bits here and there. The action and the intrigue were dialled up to 11 in this book – it’s full of danger and secrets – and dangerous secrets! The relationship between Emma and Jax evolved and became something quite profound. Amid all the chaos they do their best to remain adults, talk to each other and not let others tear them apart. It’s a sexy read, it’s exciting and I felt that we were only just scratching the surface of the history between the Knights and the Norths.

What you may not like: There wasn’t a whole lot I disliked about this book. In many ways it’s your classic book two in a trilogy. Move the plot on but spend more time getting to know the main characters. So far so true. I would say that unlike some book twos I’ve read, the suspense and the angst increased twofold. Were there lots of conversations about how their relationship was doomed to fail? Yes. Did Emma have the annoying tendency to give up and run when things got rough? Yes. But the beauty of this book was their ability to recognise their behaviour and try to correct it. It’s angsty as hell and that’s no bad thing, as the action didn’t drag at all.

Rating: 4/5 for a nail-biting read – another cliffhanger, perhaps slightly less dramatic than the previous one, but this is one trilogy I want to see through to the end!

BLOG TOUR: Filthy Rich by Julie Kriss

Book: Filthy Rich

Series: Filthy Rich #1

Author: Julie Kriss

Release date: 13 August 2019

Main characters: Samantha Riley, successful and talented Exec assistant, who’s worked with all the best (and worst) CEOs out there. Aidan Winters, CEO of Tower Venture Capital, her latest boss and the only one who can disrupt her unflappable spirit.

Plot: Samantha Riley on at the top of her career – there’s no challenge she can’t meet, no CEO she can’t deal with. She enjoys her work at Tower Venture Capital. She’s respected, trusted to get on with the job at hand and anticipate her boss’s needs in advance. Her professional instincts make her indispensable and she loves what she does. Her relationship with her boss Aidan has always been polite and professional but it’s never gone beneath the surface. She has no idea what he does outside the office, nor does she particularly care.

Aidan Winters is used to being the king of all he surveys. His work and his private life are always separate and he’s keen to maintain the status quo. The only trouble is, lately, the more time he spends in Samantha’s company, the more he appreciates her capabilities. She’s smart, unflappable and he doesn’t know what he’d do without her. More and more his thoughts about her drift into less professional territory. Their indifferent façade is about to crumble and the pair are about to be left with some very inconvenient and combustible chemistry. Will they embrace the crazy risk, or will common sense prevail?

Why you should read it: Oh my! This book though. This book was everything. It built and it built – the main characters actually invest time getting to know each other before they risked it all. I really enjoyed the character and plot development – both were well conceived and the author really spent a lot of time in building the world, the characters and their story. I truly loved the whole thing! Aidan is not your average romance CEO – he wasn’t born with a silver spoon in his mouth, nor is he particularly overbearing. Samantha isn’t your typical perky and sunny heroine – she has depth, she has flaws and she’s incredibly interesting. The situations both Aidan and Samantha enter into are truly hot. The author allows the slow build up and didn’t rush the story to get to the juicy bits.

What you may not like: Absolutely nothing! I loved every page, every word and will most likely be re-reading it again very shortly! This is book 1 of a series – later books will feature Aidan’s childhood friends and business partners. I hope that the bar remains as high as it has started out.

Rating: 5/5 for a refreshing and SERIOUSLY HOT story. It’s a slow burner and it was everything I didn’t know I needed this week!

Blog tour: One Man by Lisa Renee Jones

unnamedBook: One Man

Series: The Naked Trilogy book 1

Author: Lisa Renee Jones

Release date: 11 June 2019

Main characters: Emma Knight, daughter to the late business tycoon who founded Knight hotels. Jax North, successful businessman in his own right, determined to get revenge on the Knight clan.

Plot: Emma Knight has recently lost her father – a well-known tycoon and despite the grief, she is battling with the knowledge that he wasn’t the man she thought he was. In fact, he seems to want to control her life even beyond the grave by some peculiar stipulations laid out in his will.

Done with being a pawn in her family’s machinations, Emma is not about to roll with the punches. She’s sick of being pushed around and will not be anymore. When she meets Jax North, she’s struck by their similarities, but is also wary about his motivations – could his agenda see her caught in the crosshairs and  hurt in the process? The pair know that they face some insurmountable obstacles – but they cannot stay away from each other. Will love and lust win out against family loyalty?

Why you should read it: Oh my goodness! I haven’t read a family saga like this in a while. It really started the series with a bang! Emma is plucky, smart and eager to live her own life, while trying desperately to get to the bottom of her family’s secrets. Meeting Jax when she does creates further complications she doesn’t need in the already complicated life she lives. She’s unable to trust anyone and I was on the edge of my seat reading this story. Everyone has an agenda, and I feel for Emma’s predicament. Her chemistry with Jax was palpable and the pair burn up the pages! I hope they’ll be able to maintain that intensity across the next two books as it was hot, hot, hot!

What you may not like: You’re going to have to be patient with this trilogy – there will be cliffhangers and there will be gaps between the next instalments. If you don’t like waiting  (guilty!) then this will be difficult – but come on, it’s good to delay gratification, right? Or so I’m told.

Rating: 5/5 for an explosive start to the Naked Trilogy. I truly hope the suspense and twists and turns can be maintained through the series as I’m truly on board and greedy for more!

EXCERPT

In life, there are people who touch our lives and leave lasting marks. There are people who cut us and do so in a way that we feel as if we might never heal. If we’re lucky, we find that one person who can soothe the ache of our wounds, if not heal them. That one person who sees our flaws as perfection. That one person who can make us whole again.

Eric shoves me against the wall of that alcove, and with that window beside us, overlooking the city, his big body pressed to mine, his kiss not only devours me—it speaks to me. He’s my one person and I’m his. I feel that in his touch. I feel that in the way we connect. I taste it in his kiss. I don’t know where this leads us. I don’t know if it means we can overcome the Kingston family, but I know we can overcome his demons. He doesn’t, though. I taste that in his kiss as well. There is torment, a feeling like he’s bad for me. That he shouldn’t want me and the only comfort I find in this and where we’re headed is that he isn’t pushing me away—he’s pulling me closer. And I will hold him tighter.

I sink into the hard lines of his body, slide my hands under his shirt, hard muscle flexing beneath my palms, the thick ridge of his erection pressed to my belly. God, how I want him, how I ache for more, and the next lick of his tongue just about undoes me.  I tug on his shirt. “Take it off,” I order, wanting to feel him closer.

He reaches over his head and tugs it free and then fixes me in one of those scorching blue-eyed stares, the way he had the first night we met, and I’m melting right here in this office for him. He tugs my shirt over my head and unhooks the front of my bra, his gaze raking over my naked breasts, my nipples puckering beneath his inspection, and my sex clenching, empty, so very empty without him. “Better?” he challenges, his attention settling on my face.

My hands come down on his upper arms, the jaguar on his right shoulder, reminding me just how much he wants to deny his heritage. It reminds me just how much this family burns him alive. “A little.” I slide my hands down his hips and boldly stroke the line of his zipper, the thick ridge of his erection.

He groans, one of his hands covering my hand, the other hand catching my hair, a rough pull as his mouth closes down on mine again. And then he’s devouring me again and I love it. I love that I’ve drawn this deep, guttural reaction from him. I love that he’s all here with me, not in his own head, not doubting how good he is for me. Not swimming in the ocean of numbers in his head. Not in the hell of the Kingston family.

This drives me. I want to push him. I want to keep him here, with me. I squeeze his erection through his pants and whisper, “Why aren’t you inside me already?”

He turns me, pressing me to the wall like he had in the cottage, his big body wrapping my body, his hands on my breasts, fingers teasing my nipples, lips at my ear. “You were always sweeter than revenge,” he promises. “Always more addictive.” He plucks at my nipples. “So fucking addictive and I hated you for that.”

He reaches for my zipper and I squeeze my eyes shut. I don’t have to ask what he means. I understand. From the moment we met, he was in my head, in my heart, his touch imprinted on my body. The man I compared all others to, and they came up short. “I hated you, too.”

His hands press under the denim at my hips. He caresses them down my legs and then his arm is wrapping my waist and he’s lifting me. In a few quick moves, I’m naked and he’s standing at my hips, one palm possessively on my backside. The other on my belly.  “Do you hate me now?”  His fingers walk down to my sex and he cups me.

“Yes.” I look at him. “I still hate you for having this much control over me.” He slides his fingers along the seam of my sex, sending sensations darting through my body.

“Is that a bad thing?” he challenges, his palm squeezing my backside, his fingers slipping inside me.

“Yes,” I say, panting my way through that one word and somehow adding, “Because when I look in your eyes, like I am now, I see expectations. The wrong ones.”

He scowls and suddenly he’s turning me, pressing my back to the wall, his legs caging mine. “What does that mean?” he demands.

“It means as long as you expect to hurt me, as long as you expect you being a savant, you being different from me, to make us less, we will be. It means, you expect us to fail and so we will.” I swallow hard, my hand planting on his chest, his heart thundering beneath my palm, pounding out an emotional beat. “You think I can’t handle who and what you are. You still think I’m the princess and you’re the bastard.”

He tangles his fingers into my hair, his touch rough, erotic, as he drags my lips to his. “We are the bastard and the princess, but I don’t care anymore. I want you. I fucking need you. Do you understand me?”

Heat rushes over me, through my body, over my skin and settles in my heart and my sex. “I fucking need you, too.”

“Good, because I might have asked you to stay, but I never intended to let you go. I’m not going to let you go. I’m not going to let us go.”
