BLURBS

HOLD ON TIGHT (RETURNING HOME, BOOK ONE)

A wounded soldier. A secret baby. A second chance.

Jake Taylor has made a few terrible decisions, but none worse than the one in Afghanistan that cost him his best friend and his leg.

Or so he thinks, until he comes home from war to discover a seven-year-old son he never knew existed.

Jake can’t regret the blissful nights he spent with Mira in his arms, or the boy with his eyes, but he can leave them alone so they don’t become yet another one of his mistakes.

He’ll rehab his body, figure out how to find purpose again—and keep things simple with the woman he once craved desperately.

Except the sizzling attraction that drew him to Mira is still fierce, and staying away from her is a lot harder than he ever expected…

Mira Shipley has promised herself that if she ever sees Jake Taylor again, she’ll tell him he has a son.

She isn’t expecting to run into him at the physical therapist’s office, where he’s learning to live with an above-the-knee amputation.

She can’t blame him for being a grumpy jerk under the circumstances, but it would be a lot easier to ignore him if she didn’t desperately need child care for her son.

And if Jake didn’t make her feel brand new and dazzlingly alive.

She knows she needs to protect her son’s feelings—but no matter how hard she tries, she can’t forget the long, sweet nights she and Jake spent learning each other’s bodies and each other’s secrets…

CAN’T HOLD BACK (RETURNING HOME, BOOK TWO)

A love triangle gone wrong. The power to heal his pain. And a second chance for both of them.

Nate Riordan came home from war hurting—everywhere.

Alia Drake can touch him and make it all better.

Nate craves her touch, and not just the professional, physical therapist version. But he needs to keep his eyes on the prize and his feet firmly on the path he’s chosen: His buddy, J.J., died, and Nate lived, which means he has promises to keep. Plus, Alia hurt him once, and he’s afraid she’ll do it again.

Alia knows she has to ignore her feelings for Nate. Her job is to take care of him professionally, so she has to keep her hands on the parts of him she has a right to touch. Besides, when she lied to him two years ago, she forfeited any claim she could ever have to his heart.

Now she just has to find some way to stick to her guns, leave him alone, and do her job. Even—or especially—when he’s shirtless on the table in her office…

TO HAVE AND TO HOLD (RETURNING HOME, BOOK THREE)

He doesn’t remember her. She cherishes every moment of their time together. Is there any hope for a second chance?

Hunter Cross has lost a year. There’s a gap in his memory, and the woman who is living in his house has disappeared into it. He slept with her, fell for her, loved her—and he doesn’t remember any of it.

He knows he should send her away—except for one little thing. At night, when she creeps into his bed, his body remembers hers.

Trina Levine is heartbroken, alone with her memories. Hunter won’t claim any of it—not the joyful days, not the steamy nights. Nothing. It’s like Trina Levine dreamed it, and it hurts like nothing else could.

Except when Hunter cries out in his sleep and Trina comforts him. At those moments, Hunter’s body knows hers, and for a few, brief, blissful moments, Trina’s sure everything will be okay again.

Until morning comes.

The Consequences of Falling by Claire Contreras

cof coverBook: The Consequences of Falling

Author: Claire Contreras

Release date: 12 January 2019

Genre: Contemporary romance

Main characters: Presley Rose, young, soon-to-be-divorcee, keen to prove herself in her father’s firm. Nathaniel Bradley, her nemesis, and her father’s protégé who knows just how to push all her buttons.

Blurb:

The list of things I hate is short. Not even my soon-to-be ex-husband is on that list. Nope. I save only the worst of the worst, the crème de la crème, the absolute I cannot even for this list . . .

1. Black coffee
2. Rude people
3. Nathaniel Bradley

Which is why when my father informs me that he’s making Nathaniel Bradley his new business partner, and in turn, my boss, I flip out.

1. He’s an annoying know-it-all.
2. He calls me a spoiled princess every chance he gets.
3. He disapproves of everything I do.

I go into this knowing I’ll hate every second in his presence. Except the longer he’s around, the more I find myself staring at his lips and remembering the one time they were on mine. I randomly find myself looking at his hands and wondering how they’d feel on my skin.

I try to snap out of it, but I guess I’m not as smart as I thought I was. No matter how many times I remind myself of the times I’ve practically thrown myself at him and he’s pushed me away, I keep falling little by little.

I’d always heard that it was a bad idea to mix business with pleasure and if that’s the case, this thing with Nathaniel has demise written all over it.

Why you should read it: I haven’t read many books by Claire Contreras in the last few months – no idea why as I enjoy her work immensely. I was drawn into this story from the first page and I truly loved Presley – her inner monologue and the exploration of her difficult relationship with her parents was fascinating. Nathaniel is also a really interesting hero. He fires back at and challenges Presley in a way no-one else does in her life. I thought he was a bit harsh at times, but it became apparent as to why and then I understood where he was coming from.

Presley came across as a spoilt princess at times but I felt for her quite a bit. Going through the stress of divorce, she’s left feeling that she can’t trust anyone. She doesn’t know what to do in her professional life, as no-one really thought she was capable of much to begin with. The chemistry between Nate and Presley and the time span of the book really made for a deep love story. I loved every minute.

What you may not like: Presley has a tendency towards stubbornness which may, or may not annoy you. I found it entertaining and completely understood where she was coming from. Other than that, I can’t recommend it enough.

Rating: 5/5 for a sweet, sad and sexy read about second chances, being enough and forgiveness.

Blog tour: One Week Hating You by Roya Carmen

IMG_5341Book: One Week Hating You

Series: One Week #2

Author: Roya Carmen

Release date: 25 October 2018

Main characters: Maeve Gallagher, Blake Taylor, childhood friend and frenemy. Peter Walker, Maeve’s former fiancé.

Blurb:

Maeve is over the moon: life is good and she’s about to get married to Peter.  But when she loses her job and gets jilted at the altar, her world crumbles and she runs into her momma’s arms.

She’s back in her small hometown for a week, and she has a plan – make Peter insanely jealous and win him back.  Enter Blake Taylor, the boy who broke her heart.  She’d rather avoid him at all costs, but with his ‘bad boy’ good looks and their shared history, Blake is the perfect man for the job, as long as she can stand him long enough – it’s just one week, after all.

She’ll show Peter that she’s not the sweet wallflower he thinks she is, and he’ll come running back soon enough.

But when he does, will she still want him?

Why you should read it: I loved One Week so much, so when I heard there would be a sequel, I was beside myself. The end of book one ended on a cliffhanger, and I really wanted to know how Maeve was going to cope with being left at the altar. The action picks up pretty much from where book 1 left off, and I felt a lot of empathy for Maeve. She’s left questioning an awful lot about her life. She’s essentially homeless, jobless and fiancé-less. Life is coming at her from all sides. She returns home and I enjoyed getting to know her family and see where she came from. Her relationship with Blake was pretty antagonistic, and I really didn’t see how they were ever going to get along.

What you may not like: While I empathised with Maeve, I felt that she was altogether too lenient on Peter and what he did to her. I wondered at her lack of self-preservation, if nothing else. Yes, she’d invested a lot of years in her relationship, but come on! Love yourself! Maeve’s relationship with Blake was also a head-scratcher. It was turbulent; most of the time, the pair seemed to just want to hurt each other. Blake was really unsympathetic to what had just happened to Maeve, but for the most part, Maeve just retaliated or brushed it off. I have to admit that the burgeoning relationship and back and forth didn’t really work for me. they both came off as immature – which is realistic, when you return to your family home. You tend to regress, but there’s teasing and then there’s just being downright mean. It wasn’t until Blake finally started to open up that I could see a way clear for them and he became a fully-formed character. The chemistry rang true, but  I wasn’t 100% convinced they brought the best out in each other…

Rating: 3/5 for an entertaining, but slightly problematic read. I like flawed heroes and heroines, but I guess I don’t like cruel ones. It didn’t work for me but there was plenty in it to make me smile.

Secrets of a (Somewhat) Sunny Girl by Karen Booth

EA9F5807-BEAD-43A7-927C-5ADF673A95E5Book: Secrets of a (Somewhat) Sunny Girl

Author: Karen Booth

Series: a standalone

Release date: 16 October 2018

Main characters: Katherine Fuller, committed singleton, who is about to have her life turned on its head. Eamon MacWard, an old flame who is keen to reconnect with Katherine.

Blurb:

As sisters, they tell each other all their secrets…except one.

With divorce and infidelity hanging from nearly every branch of her family tree, Katherine Fuller sees no point in marriage. Boyfriends? Sure. Sex? Of course. Wedding vows? No, thanks. Still, when her younger sister Amy gets engaged, Katherine gathers all the enthusiasm she can. She won’t let Amy down. She’s done enough of that for a lifetime.

As the sisters embark on wedding plans, Katherine’s college love resurfaces. It nearly killed Katherine to part from sexy Irish musician Eamon more than a decade ago, but falling under his spell a second time forces her to confront everything she hid from him. The secrets surrounding her mother’s death are still fresh and raw in her mind, but one has haunted her more than the others. She can’t bear to tell anyone, especially not Amy. It could ruin far more than a wedding. It could destroy a sister’s love forever.

Why you should read it: Karen Booth is a seriously talented writer. She gets into the heads of her characters and spins an intricate tale of family secrets and human frailty. I really empathised with Katherine’s character, who, more than anything, just wants to keep her family together. This story was a family tale more than anything, with a romance bubbling in the background. It was quite unusual that the crises in the book related to Katherine’s relationship with her sister, rather than with her old flame, Eamon. Eamon is pretty straightforward as characters go. He knows what he wants and he wants Katherine. It was quite refreshing that Katherine is the one to balk at the idea of committing to him, rather than vice-versa. At times I thought maybe Eamon was too good to be true, but it turns out he was just a good guy! They do exist!

Katherine and Eamon have strong chemistry and it’s palpable. Reading about their evolving relationship kept me engaged and invested in their journey.

What you may not like: One word: Amy. God I couldn’t stand this spoilt little brat! Oof she made me sooooo mad! She was self-absorbed, took her sister’s love for granted and basically made me want to smack her! She has her own journey to go on and she does evolve as a character. I thought Katherine was so strong, despite the rough deal she got. The adults in this book do some pretty shady stuff and poor Katherine bears the brunt of most of it.

Rating: 3/5 for an engaging, if somewhat tense tale of familial guilt, making peace with the past and love, in all its forms.

About Bring Me Back: Nearly forty, Claire Abby had thought life would be a whole lot smoother by now. Single parenting her college-bound daughter is trying, her journalism career is fading, her sister’s a handful, her dad is worse, and her mom has been gone so long it’s hard to remember what it was like when she was here.

So it’s both a lucky break and a jaw-dropping distraction when Claire lands an interview with British rock star Christopher Penman. Claire spent her teenage years fantasizing he was her boyfriend. In person, Chris is everything Claire feared—off-the-charts sexy, ridiculously charming, and utterly nerve-wracking. He’s not about to discuss the rumors he’s dodged for a decade. She must earn his trust and unearth the truth, but she never banked on the heartbreaking secret behind it.

His blockbuster story is her first priority when she returns home, a nearly impossible task when Christopher starts calling. And flirting. There’s no denying his wit or his buttery British accent, and once she agrees to see him, it’s beyond anything her teenage brain ever imagined. But when Christopher’s painful past repeats itself, can Claire smooth out her life and save the man she could never forget?

Excerpt:

As soon as he closes the door behind us, he grabs my wrist and pulls me in to him.

The sudden tug makes me jerk. “You’re hurting me.”

His eyes are darker than I’ve ever seen them, as dark as coal. “No way in hell I’m letting you do this, Maeve. I’m not going to let you ruin our last night together. You’re mine tonight.”

He presses a hand gently on my cheek. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said all that.”

The anger that had overwhelmed me just a second ago, instantly fades. All that remains is longing and desire. He’s right – I can’t ruin our last night together.

He draws my mouth to his. “I’m going to miss you,” he whispers.

“Me too,” I tell him, and get lost in his kiss. It’s as sweet and sexy as the kisses we shared years ago, but as he presses me against the door, it grows in intensity, and the boy’s kiss I remember so well morphs into the man’s kiss, the kind of kiss that makes you melt, and wet with want.

I get lost in his kiss, never wanting it to end. My fingers dig into his hair wildly as I wrap my leg tightly around his waist. I can’t get enough of him.

He tears himself away, and my heart jerks. He’s teasing again, or playing games. “What?”

He smiles, an impish grin. “No more kissing.”

“What?!” I say, incredulous. There’s no way we’re not kissing all night. This is what tonight’s all about.

He takes my hand and leads me to the chairs by the window. “Not another kiss until I get you completely naked.”

I smile. “How about you?”

He grins widely. “You be patient, Freckles.”

He slides a long finger along the curve of my dress. “I love this, but it has to go.” He spins me around, and presses his hot mouth on the nape of my neck. My whole core responds to him, so easily. He slides the zipper down slowly. “You’re too good for me,” he says quietly.

I want to protest and tell him that no, I’m not too good for him, but I get completely lost in the feel of his hand sliding down my back.

“You should go back to him,” he goes on. “He can give you the life you want, the life you deserve.” He slides the sleeveless dress over my shoulders and lets it drop to the floor. He bites my shoulder gently and I close my eyes. “I’ll always want you, Maeve. I’ll always remember this… the way your skin tastes and feels under my touch.”

I reach for him and fiddle with the buttons on his shirt but I can’t quite get at them – I’m a mess. He’s turned me into rubber. His hands slide over the curve of my waist, draw circles around my navel, and finally settle on the band of my lace panties. “I know you’ll always remember this too. When you’re fucking him, you’ll be thinking about me.”

He’s right, and he knows it.

Sleepover by Serena Bell

Book: Sleepover

Series: a standalone

Author: Serena Bell

Release date: 13 November 2018

Main characters: Elle Dunning, newly-divorced mother of one who is still adjusting to life as a single mother. Sawyer Paulson, her new enigmatic neighbour.

Plot: Elle has been through the mill this past year. Her cheating husband has returned to his former high school girlfriend, leaving her adjusting to single life with her son Madden. Trying to make the best out of a painful situation, she has her work and a good network of friends to keep her sane.

When Sawyer Dunning moves in next door, that sanity is about to be tested. Elle knows Sawyer – quite well already. It’s it everyday that a former one night stand moves in next door. She could ignore him – but that option is soon made impossible when her son becomes fast friends with Sawyer’s son, Jonah.

Sawyer is struggling with single parenthood and the spectre of grief. It’s been two years since his wife died, but her presence lingers and moving on seems impossible. Sawyer allows himself the odd meaningless encounter – always the one time, never to be repeated with nameless women. Until Elle. Something about her reaches out to him and he’s terrified of what that could mean for his life, his family and his piece of mind…

Why you should read it: I really enjoyed this down to earth story. Elle was so relatable and had been treated shabbily. You can’t help but feel for her. Her ex and his fiancée are shameless. I felt a lot of righteous indignation about her situation, but she dealt with it all with such grace, it was admirable. I enjoyed the slow-burning chemistry between Elle and Sawyer. Their kids bring them together and in many ways force them to confront their situation head on. Sawyer was a well drawn male character. He was a mixture of private and vulnerable and strong and he was in a very familiar situation to many.

What you may not like: Not a great deal to dislike in this book. It’s fresh, entertaining and a story of personal growth. What’s not to like?

Rating: 4/5 for a very sexy and page-turning story. I love the characters and the premise. I think you might, too.

Blog tour: Dr. Strange Beard by Penny Reid

9046FE82-8988-426B-9C78-47237A203E4EBook: Dr. Strange Beard

Series: Winston Brothers #5

Author: Penny Reid

Release date: 30 July 2018

Main characters: Simone Payton, logical thinker, on assignment for the FBI in her hometown. Roscoe Winston, youngest of the Winston clan, and hellbent on avoiding Simone at all costs.

Blurb:

Hunches, horse races, and heartbreak

Ten years after Simone Payton broke his heart, all Roscoe Winston wants is a doughnut. He’d also like to forget her entirely, but that’s never going to happen. Roscoe remembers everything—every look, every word, every single unrequited second—and the last thing he needs is another memory of Simone.

Unfortunately, after one chance encounter, Simone keeps popping up everywhere he happens to be . . .

Ten years after Roscoe Winston dropped out of her life, all Simone Payton wants is to exploit him. She’d also like some answers from her former best friend about why he ghosted her, but if she never gets those answers, that’s a-okay. Simone let go of the past a long time ago. Seriously, she has. She totally, totally has. She is definitely not still thinking about Roscoe. Nope. She’s more than happy to forget he exists.

But first, she needs just one teeny-tiny favor . . .

Why you should read it: Come on people, it’s Penny-fricking-Reid, of course you should read it! If you follow my reviews, then you’ll know how much of a sad fan girl I am about her! I haven’t really read this series in orders – I tend to dip in and out of it when I need a damn good read and this one fell into my lap when I needed a particularly good read. It didn’t disappoint! The narrative was engaging, quirky and as always, it was smart as hell. Simone and Roscoe were complex and interesting characters – their inner monologues gave insight and also humour – and I couldn’t put the book down until it was done. The intense attraction between Simone and Roscoe really was palpable – it was a slow-burning seduction and I had to fan myself quite a bit during this read! I also enjoyed the role reversals, where Simone was the more worldly character and she took the lead. Hot! It also had a lot of pathos, heart and damn well made me cry in places. Like proper, full on blubbing!

What you may not like: I usually try to play devil’s advocate in my reviews, but I’m truly struggling here. I appreciated Penny Reid’s treatment of the heroine – I know some authors are afraid of writing about non-white characters in case they get it ‘wrong’ and I get it – some people have done it well, while others have done a horrible job! Simone was a multi-faceted character, who was just getting on with her life. There were no lazy stereotypes and hopefully, authors like Penny Reid and Tiffany Reisz will inspire other authors to not be so afraid of writing about POC.

Rating: 5/5 for a truly wonderful, exciting and engaging read. I forgot how much I love this series.

“May I get you something to drink while you wait for the rest of your party?” the waiter asked.

I would normally wait to see what the client did and follow his lead on alcohol. But tonight was not the norm.

I rubbed at my stiff neck. “I’ll take a vodka cranberry, please.”

I hoped it would help calm my nerves and release some of the tension in my jaw before I gave myself a full-blown headache. Taking out my phone, I started to scroll through emails to distract myself while waiting for my drink and dinner companion.

My head whipped up at the sound of Gray’s voice behind me. “Sorry I’m late.”

My heart unexpectedly fluttered, and I fought against the feeling of excitement. “Are you really? Because I get the sense you don’t have any manners after the way you interrupted me a million times today.”

He completely ignored my attitude as he took the seat across from me. “Traffic is a bitch getting downtown at this time. Next time we’ll have dinner at my place.”

“There won’t be a next time.”

Gray’s mouth curved into a smug smile as he snagged my gaze. “Sure there will. There’ll be plenty of next times. And eventually you’ll stop pretending you don’t enjoy my company.”

I hated that my body reacted to him. Right from the very start, we’d had a crazy chemistry between us that was difficult to dull.

I sighed. “What are you doing, Gray? Why did you come to my firm?”

He lifted the cloth napkin in front of him and laid it across his lap. “Isn’t that obvious? I need new legal representation.”

“At my firm? And you’d prefer that representation come from an associate instead of my boss’s boss—the head of our securities division? Or even from Pittman, who would gladly hold your hand and provide you whatever legal advice you need from his fifty-plus years of experience?”

“Loyalty is important to me. I want someone I can trust with my business.”

“And you’ve decided that’s me? An associate with five years experience who just got off probation with the Bar Association for violating attorney-client privilege?”

The waiter arrived with my drink. “Here you go, ma’am.” He turned to Gray. “May I get you something to drink? Or would you like to wait until the last of your party joins you this evening?”

“It’s just the two of us. I’ll have a Macallan, neat, please.”

“Coming right up.” The waiter walked around to the other side of the table and started to remove the third place setting.

I put my hand out, stopping him. “We actually do have another party coming, so you can leave that.”

“Very well.” He nodded.

Gray waited until the waiter was out of earshot. “I didn’t invite anyone else to dinner.”

I sipped my drink and offered a saccharine-sweet fake smile. “I did. Figured an important client like you should have more than one attorney to answer his questions.”

Just as I set down my glass, I saw the other man I was waiting for enter the restaurant. He scanned the room, looking for me, so I held up my hand and waved.

“Perfect timing. There’s Oliver now.”

Gray glanced at the man heading toward us and back to me. Instead of being pissed off, the jerk was amused. “That’s cute. You invited a chaperone because you don’t trust yourself with me.”

We hope you enjoyed this sneak peek of THE NAKED TRUTH.
