Blog tour: War of Hearts by S. Young

Book: War of Hearts

Series: a wolfy standalone

Author: S. Young

Release date: 1 October 2019

Main characters: Thea Quinn, extraordinarily powerful woman on the run from those who would harm her; Conall MacLennan, alpha leader of Clan MacLennan and supe sent to deliver her to his mysterious client, Jasper Ashforth.

Plot: Thea Quinn has been running for the last six years. She’s never able to remain in one place long enough, never able to put down roots. She’s forgotten how to live, all she knows is survival. She has managed to remain one step ahead of her pursuer all that time, but when Jasper Ashforth steps up his efforts to get her back and enlists the help of Conall MacLennan, the gap between hunter and his prey narrows dramatically.

Conall is no ordinary wolf. Already an alpha, leader of his clan, he also possesses tracking abilities that are second to none. He has his reasons for pursuing and delivering Thea to Ashforth, and nothing will stand in his way. The pair have a mutual distrust for one another from the outset, but a series of incidents force the pair to cooperate with each other if they wish to make it to their destination alive. There are twists and turns along the way and Conall is forced to reevaluate everything he thought he knew…

Why you should read it: My goodness this book was an epic ride! There were so many twists and turns – it was dense and packed full of adventure, intrigue and sexual tension. Conall was a pretty straightforward character who thinks he has the measure of life and people in general. Nothing could prepare him for meeting Thea – there’s no-one like her and she keeps on surprising him throughout the book. Their slow acceptance of each other and the growing dilemma facing Conall (as he realises the implications of the bargain he struck) really kept me reading. I was on the edge of my seat at times, as the action didn’t let up or drag at all. The pace of the book was pitched right, and I felt the intensity of Thea and Conall’s acquaintance. Their chemistry built steadily and I really enjoyed how their relationship developed. The book was romantic too – very sweet and poignant in places, and it didn’t become too saccharine either.

What you may not like: There was a lot of mythology in the book and a magical narrative that did require quite a lot of concentration to stick with. At times, I wanted to get back to the main action – but that’s down to my own impatience, not the subject matter being uninteresting.

Rating: 5/5 for a magical and intricate world that I became fully immersed in. I thoroughly enjoyed the main characters and how they interacted with each other. Can’t recommend enough to those who love paranormal – I forgot how brilliantly S Young can create an otherworldly universe without it becoming too outlandish.

Light Shadows by S.L. Jennings

Book: Light Shadows

Series: The Dark Light Series #3

Author: S.L. Jennings

Review by: Onnica

Basic story: If Gabriella thought that life would become less complicated when she ascended to both her light and dark destiny, she was greatly mistaken. She’s twenty-one; in possession of some new and terrifying abilities; reunited with Dorian, love of her life and the man sworn to protect her come what may. She didn’t quite bargain for her ‘dead’ birth-father turning up on her doorstep and furious that Dorian, his former-best friend is now her significant other.

Elsewhere, she has to worry about the dark elements who seem hell-bent on hurting her friends and family in order to get to her. She’s about to face the biggest test of her life and whether the prophesy is fulfilled or not depends on whether she can find the strength to battle whatever comes her way. Those who stand with her will make her strong, but will they all be left standing at the final battle?

Why you should read this: I have waited and waited and waited some more for this book! I can honestly tell you that it was worth the wait! There is angst and high-drama a-plenty, but there’s also a very exciting story to be had too. Dorian is back in technicolor glory! There’s a fair bit of sexy times to keep you satisfied and the action flows well. The writing is so good – the author conveys the mood, the environment and the atmosphere perfectly. Niko, Dorian’s younger brother, figures prominently in the book too. You’ll be spoilt for choice!

What you might hate: Ok – I’m going to be honest. Gabs can be a whiny brat at times and she does wallow in it. She knows Dorian loves her yet, at the first sign of trouble she’s ready to think the worst of him. Faithless girl! Also, as the supposedly most dangerous and powerful being on earth, I was looking forward to her kicking ass a bit more than she did. Instead, she had the tendency to let others do the saving. That disappointed me a bit and would have mitigated her whinging!

Rating: 4.5/5 – I thoroughly enjoyed the story, the mythology and the roller-coaster ride of this book. It was a great series and one I’ll come back to again and again.

Light Shadows is out now.

Dark Light by S.L. Jennings

Review by: Onnica

Basic Story: After nineteen unremarkable years on the planet, where Gabriella Winters has basically flown under everyone’s radar, she is about to discover that turning twenty will transform her life beyond all recognition. On her twentieth birthday her adopted parents decide to reveal who her birth-parents were. It turns out that she’s not mediocre at all. Instead, she learns that she is part Light Enchanter (a race of sorcerers created to help Humanity and spread Light) and part Dark One (or Warlock to you and me). On her twenty-first birthday she will become the Chosen one; the bridge between light and dark, who has the potential to heal the rift and end the enmity between the warring factions.

Her birth-mother Natalia fell for a Dark One named Alex and their union created Gabriella – a unique being, prophesied to bring peace to the two worlds. This didn’t go over too well with either side and her parents were killed. Not everyone is happy about an all-powerful, magical being and Gabriella soon finds that she is in a race to stay alive until her powers mature. When girls of a similar age start turning up dead in her neighbourhood, Gabriella knows it’s only a matter of time before they will come for her.

To further complicate matters, the night she meets an intense dark stranger at her birthday party her peaceful life is distorted further. Dorian Skotos – tall, Greek, devastatingly handsome, seems determined to know Gabriella better. She’s been warned to trust no-one beyond her close-knit family, but will common sense prevail over the undeniable pull towards her new friend?

Why you should read this: if you love a good paranormal story like me and also very smexy times, then you need to read this book. It’s well-edited, the pace moves along at a good speed. You get to know the characters and Gabriella is shaping up to be a pretty formidable heroine. Dorian – he is a great hero. He’s mysterious, doesn’t say a whole lot, smoulders at the right moment but is a character with depth. I cannot wait for the next book, which is out 15 March 2013.

What you might hate: I know from discussions on Twitter that some people aren’t happy about serialised books and I agree to a certain extent but this series has A LOT of potential – I hate having to wait as much as the next person, but I have a feeling it will be worth it.

Rating: 5 sparkly stars out of 5 – it really deserves it. I was captivated from the start, stayed up way too late last night finishing it and I loved the world that S.L Jennings created. Read it!
