BOOK REVIEW: Winter Tales by Tiffany Reisz

Yes! This is my first seasonal review of the year – believe me, this anthology sets the bar HIGH! Fans of the Original Sinners world will rejoice to pick up this collection of short stories. It’s like meeting up with old friends. Some stories may be familiar to you, others a delightful discovery, but they’re all delectably wicked!

Book: Winter Tales

Series: The Original sinners

Author: Tiffany Reisz

Release date: 19 November 2019

Blurb:

In DECEMBER WINE, the long-awaited story of Nora Sutherlin’s first meeting with Nico can finally be told. Nora enlists her editor (and sometimes lover) Zach Easton on a mission to track down Kingsley’s long-lost son. Nicolas “Nico” Delacroix turns out to be young, strikingly handsome, and very French. He wants nothing to do with his father…but everything to do with Nora.

This special holiday-themed collection also includes the novellas POINSETTIA, THE CHRISTMAS TRUCE, and THE SCENT OF WINTER (previously available only as ebooks). A bonus short story starring Søren rounds out the WINTER TALES anthology.

Why you should read it: Well, presumably you’re a fan of the Original sinners? This kinky band of outsiders who, over the years have formed a tight-knit community of their own? Fans of Nora’s mischief, Kingsley’s charm and Søren’s… well, Søren-ness, will adore these vignettes into these characters’ lives. We ping back and forth through different time periods and one thing doesn’t change – Reisz’s ability to weave intricate stories, giving each and every character such depth, providing humour and pathos.

What you may not like: Die-hard fans will love these stories – of that I’m sure. I was laughing in places, then touched by those feels in others. I was glad to finally see some vulnerability from Søren – I felt like he was actually giving something back. He receives so much adoration and devotion from Nora, Kingsley and everyone else he encounters, but gives/emotes only sometimes. In these stories I finally got a glimpse into the inner workings of Marcus Stearns. He has an actual heart – and it beats hard and strong for those he loves!

Rating: 4/5 for a delightful, seasonal read. It warmed my heart… and other places!

BLOG TOUR: Violent Triumphs by Jessica Hawkins

Book: Violent Triumphs

Series: White Monarch #3

Author: Jessica Hawkins

Release date: 12 November 2019

Main characters: Natalia de la Rosa, beloved daughter of cartel kingpin Costa Cruz and Cristiano’s conflicted wife, Cristiano de la Rosa, her husband and leader of the Calavera cartel.

Blurb:

I’ve become a queen to the forsaken, a leader to thieves, and the wife of a man who instills fear in all who cross his path. He was the husband I didn’t want. Now, I can’t fathom life without my king.

I should’ve been ready for anything. Like the caterpillar that feeds on poison during metamorphosis, I was raised in the dangerous world of cartel crime. But nothing could’ve prepared me for Cristiano de la Rosa, his brother’s poison, or the Calavera cartel.

This is still a story about a love strong enough to topple households, unite enemies, and divide brothers. Resilient enough to bring down those who would try to destroy it . . . and selfless enough to make the ultimate sacrifice.

But I was warned, and so were you. Death’s day always comes. This time, it will find what was once a caterpillar is now a butterfly—and hell hath no fury like the White Monarch.

Why you should read it: Oh my goodness! This book! Jessica H made us wait until it was just right and I can see now just how worth the wait was! This book picks up where Violent Ends left off, which is just as well as I was truly going off my head at the ending of book 2! The plot, pace and action in Violent Triumphs was high octane all the way. There were lots and lots of scenes to enjoy featuring Natalia and Cristiano – seeing them treat each other with care and seeing them sort through their feelings for each other was delicious. I loved every minute. Natalia has no choice but to grow up in this book – she becomes strong and calculating and every bit the queen of the underworld. The chemistry between Natalia and Cristiano – ooh lawd! Off the charts and then some. Seeing them give in to their attraction completely – finally – was so satisfying. I wanted to shout AT LAST! Technically, I really enjoyed the mix of Spanish and English in the text – it felt natural and also correct. No Google translate here. The book was also full of beautiful dialogue, both poetic and romantic and I could not get enough.

What you may not like: I really don’t know what you’d dislike in this story if you’ve been following and enjoying the series. It closed the plot lines and provided a delightful conclusion to a very exciting series.

Rating: 5/5 for a seriously sexy, smart and satisfying story about cartels, honour and love. I totally inhaled it and can’t recommend it more.

Blog tour: One Woman by Lisa Renee Jones

81ACA9F9-8629-453C-94AB-51F15595BA9EBook: One Woman

Series: The Naked Trilogy #2

Author: Lisa Renee Jones

Release date: 17 September 2019

Main characters: Emma Knight, daughter to the late business tycoon who founded Knight hotels. Jax North, successful businessman in his own right, once hellbent on revenge, now hopelessly in love with Emma Knight – his family’s enemy.

Blurb:

The second book in the dangerously sexy Naked Trilogy by New York Times bestselling author Lisa Renee Jones.
Emma and Jax came together in the midst of secrets and lies, but in a castle in Maine, they seek passion and sanctuary. What they find is a mystery that could stretch beyond all their expectations. And what Emma finds is danger.

One Woman begins where One Man ended, with Emma one step from death and Jax the only man who can save her

“We’re not them,” he says, his thumb stroking my cheek. “They don’t decide who we are or what we are together.”

Why you should read it: Having loved One Man as much as I did, it was a no-brainer that I’d want to devour One Woman. Book one ended on a doozy of a cliffhanger, and book two got straight back into the action. There was also the very useful recap of book one’s plot for those who aren’t reading the trilogy in one go. That was a nice touch, as I’ll admit I totally forgot little bits here and there. The action and the intrigue were dialled up to 11 in this book – it’s full of danger and secrets – and dangerous secrets! The relationship between Emma and Jax evolved and became something quite profound. Amid all the chaos they do their best to remain adults, talk to each other and not let others tear them apart. It’s a sexy read, it’s exciting and I felt that we were only just scratching the surface of the history between the Knights and the Norths.

What you may not like: There wasn’t a whole lot I disliked about this book. In many ways it’s your classic book two in a trilogy. Move the plot on but spend more time getting to know the main characters. So far so true. I would say that unlike some book twos I’ve read, the suspense and the angst increased twofold. Were there lots of conversations about how their relationship was doomed to fail? Yes. Did Emma have the annoying tendency to give up and run when things got rough? Yes. But the beauty of this book was their ability to recognise their behaviour and try to correct it. It’s angsty as hell and that’s no bad thing, as the action didn’t drag at all.

Rating: 4/5 for a nail-biting read – another cliffhanger, perhaps slightly less dramatic than the previous one, but this is one trilogy I want to see through to the end!

BLOG TOUR: Need You Now by M O’Keefe

9757F929-A13F-4E23-B841-0E15E548A456Book: Need You Now

Series: Linked to the Debt series but can be read as a standalone

Author: Molly O’Keefe

Release date: 9 September 2019

Main characters: Rosa Burns, mother to Ariella and wife of Marco Zambrano. Marco – the man who is determined to get Rosa back into his and Ariella’s life.

 Blurb:

MARCO

I have loved Rosa since I met her in high school English, even though the odds have always been stacked against us. She is the child of criminals, resigned to a bleak future. I’m the heir to a successful construction company and am not afraid to go after what I want.

And I want Rosa. Always and forever.

ROSA

I broke the law to make sure Marco got custody of our daughter, and I paid the price. But now that I’m out of jail, I’m terrified my ugly past might bleed into our daughter’s future.

The only way to ensure that doesn’t happen is staying far away from both of them.

But Marco isn’t letting me run from him. Not again.

Why you should read it: I actually forgot how much I love reading about the kids from St. Jude’s juvenile facility. The collective story is one of heartbreak, abuse and hopelessness for each inmate. This time, it’s Rosa’s turn. Her tale is one of bad luck and an even worse family. I really felt for what she’d been through. I totally understood her motives for protecting her own family and trying to get by any way she could. I also understood her bitterness at how things turned out. Her yearning for her family was palpable, but at times, because of her pride, she did tend to get in her own way, which was baffling and frustrating. There are some surprises along the way that I won’t spoil, but Rosa and Marco have a lot of rebuilding to do in their relationship and it’s not all plain sailing. Rosa isn’t the only one experiencing bitterness for the past, nor is she the only character who is suffering.

What you may not like: As the characters spend a fair amount of time sparring with each other, there is point-scoring going on and times when they deliberately hurt each other. There’s a particular scene where Marco makes Rosa feel like worthless – it’s a pretty well-used trope and one that really disappointed me. The easiest way to lash out at a women? The woman you love? Throw cash at her feet. Despite what she’d done or not done, this was a really cheap move that made me question my feelings about Marco.

Rating: 4/5 for another heart-wrenching story from the former inmates of St. Jude’s. For all the heartache and cruelty, I truly enjoy the interwoven stories of Tommy, Beth, Carissa, Simon and Rosa. I CANNOT wait to finally find out more about Bates – and hopefully Carissa too!

COVER REVEAL: Tell Me Everything by Amy Hatvany

perf5.500x8.500.indd

“A sizzling, squirming, thought-provoking story of female growth.”

– Caroline Kepnes, New York Times bestselling author

Tell Me Everything, a provocative do-not-miss novel from author Amy Hatvany, is coming November 5th and we have the gorgeous cover!

A happily married couple. A dance with a stranger at a bar.

One night—one seemingly insignificant choice—can change everything.

Jessica and Jake Snyder love each other, and their life together. Successful in their chosen careers, they reside in the picturesque, though at times stifling, Seattle suburb of Queens Ridge as they parent teenagers Ella and Tucker.

As so often happens in marriage, their romantic life falls casualty to busy schedules and repetitive routine, until one night, a stranger asks Jessica to dance. On a whim, Jake urges her to say yes, saying that he wants to watch this other man touch her, something that surprises Jessica by arousing her like never before. A door opens for them then, into a realm of exploration neither of them knew existed.

They create rules to protect their marriage, and are thrilled when their relationship is strengthened and enriched by deeper levels of communication and trust brought about by this exciting, but taboo behavior. That is, until Jessica keeps a secret from Jake and embarks on a tryst with an intriguing man from her past, who, when she tries to end things between them, decides to seek revenge.

What happens after that will threaten to destroy their world—and them.

A juicy and insightful look into the shifting definition of modern marriage and the limits placed upon female sexuality, TELL ME EVERYTHING will make you question everything you thought you knew about what constitutes marital bliss, and keep you turning pages into the night.

About Amy Hatvany

Amy Hatvany headshot, high resolution

Amy Hatvany graduated with a degree in Sociology only to discover most sociologists are unemployed. Soon followed a variety of jobs – some of which she loved, like decorating wedding cakes; others which she merely tolerated, like receptionist.

In 1998, Amy finally decided to sell her car, quit her job, and take a chance on her passion: writing books.

Her background in sociology inspires and informs much of her work as she tackles timely and controversial issues in her novels including mental illness, domestic abuse, and alcoholism. She is published by Washington Square Press/Atria Books, and has been both a Target Book Club and Costco Pennie’s Pick.

Amy spends most of her time today with her kids and her second and final husband, Stephan. (Seriously, if this one doesn’t work out, she’s done, kaput, no more husbands!) When Amy’s not with friends or family, she is most likely reading, cooking, or zoning out on certain reality television shows. She eagerly awaits Bravo auditions for the cast of “Top Author.” (“Quick Edit” instead of “Quick Fire” Challenge? C’mon, producers! That’s gripping television!)

So Steady by Eve Dangerfield

Book: So Steady

Series: Silver Daughters Ink #2

Author: Eve Dangerfield

Release date: 14 August 2019

Main characters: Nicole DaSilva, the more conservative of the DaSilva sisters, struggling with her competing priorities. Noah Newcomb, talented, virtually silent tattooist, who is the polar opposite to Nicole, but attracted to her nonetheless.

Plot: Nicole DaSilva has always been the ‘perfect’ sister. A respectable accountant, she is the only DaSilva daughter to have up sticks and moved to Sydney in pursuit of respectability and success beyond the chaos of her family.

Her plan seems to have stalled, since her engagement and her life in Sydney no longer satisfy. She misses her sisters, and needs to find out why the family business is in trouble.

There’s also the added complication of Noah Newcomb – her twin sister’s colleague and friend. He’s an enigma  wrapped in a mystery and he makes her want things she shouldn’t…

Noah is a loner – not by design, but it’s better that way. His past is complicated and because of it he has no business wanting Nicole the way he does. No good can come from their mutual attraction, but that’s the thing about attraction. It won’t be denied…

Why you should read it: If you read So Wild (Sam’s book) then it makes sense you’d want her twin Nicole’s story, right? Nicole and Sam are like chalk and cheese, but bubbling under Nicole’s exterior is a very complicated and frustrated woman desperate to get out. I liked Nicole – she feels honour bound to take care of her bratty sisters and help the business succeed. That’s why I wanted her to get with Noah – she deserved to let her hair down for once and do what she wanted. She’s seriously repressed at the start of the book, so seeing her evolve and unclench was really interesting.

What you may struggle with: Noah was tricky. He’s not big on words so it was hard to get a read on him. Even though parts of the book were written in his pov, I still felt a disconnect between how he felt and what he said and did. He and Nicole had heat, and I love a bit of dirty talk, but their brand of sexual congress didn’t really do it for me unfortunately. I don’t really want to read about spitting – EVER!

Sam and Tabitha were also quite suffocating in this book. I don’t remember them being so in your face in book 1, but they were soooo frickin annoying. I get it – your sisters with no boundaries, but back up! I know we regress in our family dynamics but they were cloying and claustrophobic.

Rating: 3/5 for an engaging story featuring untypical characters. It was nice to read a book that didn’t follow the standard archetypes. Immature siblings aside, it’s worth a look.

Review: The Rose by Tiffany Reisz

cover - the roseBook: The Rose

Series: The Red #2

Author: Tiffany Reisz

Release date: 16 April 2019

Main characters: Ophelia Godwick, daughter of The Earl and Countess of Godwick, apple of their eye, but concealing a secret that could ruin them all. Augustine Bowman, handsome stranger who approaches Lia about a new artefact in her possession.

Plot: When Lia Godwick receives an outrageously beautiful and expensive gift for her graduation, she is struck by its beauty, but nothing can prepare her for its provenance and its significance.

Augustine Bowman is desperate to get his hands on the gift – a kylix – an ornamental cup thought to date back to Ancient Greece. His wish is to return it to its rightful place before it falls into the wrong hands. He’s willing to pay through the nose for it and sweeten the deal for Lia – if only she has the courage to accept his offer.

When a former acquaintance lands Lia in hot water, she has no choice but to accept Augustine’s offer to buy the kylix. But she’s not handing it over without knowing precisely what she stands to lose first. One taste from the cup transports Lia and August to unspeakable pleasures and fantasies – ones that feel so real the lines between reality and fantasy start to blur. Will Lia be able to part with the cup and August…?

Why you should read it: Oh my! This book’s release is timely actually, as I’m currently devouring Stephen Fry’s Heroes, (also about Greek myths) so I felt super smart reading and keeping up with a book about Greek mythology with lots of erotica added in! The plot was engaging and playful, with a delicate and contradictory heroine – innocent in many ways, yet leading a double life. Her interactions with August were sparky and full of excellent dialogue, which made me laugh and keep on reading. August was all you would want in a hero – confident, sexy and all about his partner’s pleasure. I enjoyed their verbal jousting and how quickly they became allies, then lovers. The book had all the elements I enjoy – references to great books, intrigue, romance and obstacles to be overcome. The chemistry was off the charts – it was seriously hot. It built and built and built.

What you may not like: I think if you liked The Red, there’s no reason you won’t like this – I preferred this book, as it was so vivid and so much seemed to happen in it. The characters felt real to me and I wanted them together so much! If Greek mythology and fantasy isn’t your thing you may struggle with it – but I can’t recommend it enough.

Rating: 5/5 for a well-crafted story and world to escape into. This isn’t a book to binge on, it needs to be enjoyed and savoured. And savour it, I did.

Can’t Hold Back by Serena Bell

Book: Can’t Hold Back

Series: A Returning Home Novel #2

Author: Serena Bell

Re-release date: 26 March 2019

Main characters: Alia Drake, physio who adores her job and helping others; Nate Riordan, ex-servicemen with a host of demons that need to be slayed.

Plot: Alia Drake thrives on nurturing others and being needed. Her job as a physical therapist is something she excels at and she feels she can make a real difference in the lives of her patients. When she has the opportunity to work at R&R, a veterans’ rehab centre, she jumps at the chance. Even the prospect of treating Nate Riordan isn’t about to put her off her dream job.

Nate Riordan has returned from service battered, both physically and mentally. Struggling with a pain-medication addiction, he can’t deny he needs help any longer. When he arrives at R&R, he isn’t prepared to come face-to-face with Alia – the girl who helped wreck his romantic dreams the year before. He may be unable to trust her, but if he’s going to manage his constant pain, he will have to put his hostilities on hold, if only temporarily.

Alia is determined to reach him and help Nate connect with the pain. This means facing some hard, painful memories and also dealing with the fact that their shared history is far from over…

Why you should read it: I inhaled this book on a wet Sunday afternoon, and it was time well spent! Serena Bell writes some seriously smart, funny and sexy stories. They always hit you right in the gut without being too drama filled or ridiculous. Nate and Alia’s story was sweet, realistic and sexy as hell. Alia is a level-headed heroine who needs to face her own demons. It’s good to see her gradually let go of her issues. Nate is hot! He’s sensitive, hot, well-rounded. Hot. (Ok, you get the point.) I honesty couldn’t put the book down until I finished.

What you might hate: Nada – this is a military romance – so I guess if it’s not your thing, then that may be an issue. I don’t read a lot of stories set in this world, but the ones I have read are so well done that I enjoyed them immensely. It’s a very human story, set in a world that felt authentic.

Rating: 5/5 – for a thoughtful, romantic and insightful story. Definitely recommend it!

Fight or Flight by Samantha Young

cover142255-medium

Book: Fight or Flight

Series: a standalone

Author: Samantha Young

Release date: 9 October 2018

Main characters: Ava Breevort, frequent flyer, who’d rather be anywhere other than Arizona. Caleb Scott, a fellow passenger and Ava’s soon-to-be-nemesis.

Blurb:

The universe is conspiring against Ava Breevort. As if flying back to Phoenix to bury a childhood friend wasn’t hell enough, a cloud of volcanic ash traveling from overseas delayed her flight back home to Boston. Her last ditch attempt to salvage the trip was thwarted by an arrogant Scotsman, Caleb Scott, who steals a first class seat out from under her. Then over the course of their journey home, their antagonism somehow lands them in bed for the steamiest layover Ava’s ever had. And that’s all it was – until Caleb shows up on her doorstep.

When pure chance pulls Ava back into Caleb’s orbit, he proposes they enjoy their physical connection while he’s stranded in Boston. Ava agrees, knowing her heart’s in no danger since a) she barely likes Caleb and b) his existence in her life is temporary. Not long thereafter Ava realizes she’s made a terrible error because as it turns out Caleb Scott isn’t quite so unlikeable after all. When his stay in Boston becomes permanent, Ava must decide whether to fight her feelings for him or give into them. But even if she does decide to risk her heart on Caleb, there is no guarantee her stubborn Scot will want to risk his heart on her…

Why you should read it: I truly look forward to cracking open a book by Samantha Young – I always know it’s going to be compelling, soulful and intelligent. Fight or Flight was no exception. Don’t let the cute cover fool you – there’s plenty of depth and pathos to this story. It’s quite unlike anything I’ve read recently. Ava is dealing with a lot. Grief, guilt, personal identity crisis. You name it, she’s dealing with it, with only her friend Harper to help. Enter Caleb Scott. A gruff, unlikeable and rude character. I didn’t know what to make of him. We’re all used to the hero being a bit of a dick at times, but Caleb was something else. He’s so surly and careless of Ava’s feelings that it took me a while to want them to be together! The chemistry was off the charts however, so I could believe the attraction between them. The narrative was strong and the story unfolded at a steady pace. Samantha Young is a very masterful writer – she doesn’t drag her feet or drag out a story.

What you might not like: Caleb – for me, he was the main obstacle in this book. He has a backstory of course – one that will surprise you, but he’s so unpleasant at times that I really felt for Ava and thought she should just leave him to his own misery! Of course, there is redemption in the end – I just feel that poor Ava had to work for it.

Rating: 3.5/5 for an engaging, entertaining yet serious story about forgiveness, moving on and grief. The dialogue and the book’s premise were refreshing.
