Review: The Rose by Tiffany Reisz

cover - the roseBook: The Rose

Series: The Red #2

Author: Tiffany Reisz

Release date: 16 April 2019

Main characters: Ophelia Godwick, daughter of The Earl and Countess of Godwick, apple of their eye, but concealing a secret that could ruin them all. Augustine Bowman, handsome stranger who approaches Lia about a new artefact in her possession.

Plot: When Lia Godwick receives an outrageously beautiful and expensive gift for her graduation, she is struck by its beauty, but nothing can prepare her for its provenance and its significance.

Augustine Bowman is desperate to get his hands on the gift – a kylix – an ornamental cup thought to date back to Ancient Greece. His wish is to return it to its rightful place before it falls into the wrong hands. He’s willing to pay through the nose for it and sweeten the deal for Lia – if only she has the courage to accept his offer.

When a former acquaintance lands Lia in hot water, she has no choice but to accept Augustine’s offer to buy the kylix. But she’s not handing it over without knowing precisely what she stands to lose first. One taste from the cup transports Lia and August to unspeakable pleasures and fantasies – ones that feel so real the lines between reality and fantasy start to blur. Will Lia be able to part with the cup and August…?

Why you should read it: Oh my! This book’s release is timely actually, as I’m currently devouring Stephen Fry’s Heroes, (also about Greek myths) so I felt super smart reading and keeping up with a book about Greek mythology with lots of erotica added in! The plot was engaging and playful, with a delicate and contradictory heroine – innocent in many ways, yet leading a double life. Her interactions with August were sparky and full of excellent dialogue, which made me laugh and keep on reading. August was all you would want in a hero – confident, sexy and all about his partner’s pleasure. I enjoyed their verbal jousting and how quickly they became allies, then lovers. The book had all the elements I enjoy – references to great books, intrigue, romance and obstacles to be overcome. The chemistry was off the charts – it was seriously hot. It built and built and built.

What you may not like: I think if you liked The Red, there’s no reason you won’t like this – I preferred this book, as it was so vivid and so much seemed to happen in it. The characters felt real to me and I wanted them together so much! If Greek mythology and fantasy isn’t your thing you may struggle with it – but I can’t recommend it enough.

Rating: 5/5 for a well-crafted story and world to escape into. This isn’t a book to binge on, it needs to be enjoyed and savoured. And savour it, I did.

Concerto - PO

Can’t Hold Back by Serena Bell

Book: Can’t Hold Back

Series: A Returning Home Novel #2

Author: Serena Bell

Re-release date: 26 March 2019

Main characters: Alia Drake, physio who adores her job and helping others; Nate Riordan, ex-servicemen with a host of demons that need to be slayed.

Plot: Alia Drake thrives on nurturing others and being needed. Her job as a physical therapist is something she excels at and she feels she can make a real difference in the lives of her patients. When she has the opportunity to work at R&R, a veterans’ rehab centre, she jumps at the chance. Even the prospect of treating Nate Riordan isn’t about to put her off her dream job.

Nate Riordan has returned from service battered, both physically and mentally. Struggling with a pain-medication addiction, he can’t deny he needs help any longer. When he arrives at R&R, he isn’t prepared to come face-to-face with Alia – the girl who helped wreck his romantic dreams the year before. He may be unable to trust her, but if he’s going to manage his constant pain, he will have to put his hostilities on hold, if only temporarily.

Alia is determined to reach him and help Nate connect with the pain. This means facing some hard, painful memories and also dealing with the fact that their shared history is far from over…

Why you should read it: I inhaled this book on a wet Sunday afternoon, and it was time well spent! Serena Bell writes some seriously smart, funny and sexy stories. They always hit you right in the gut without being too drama filled or ridiculous. Nate and Alia’s story was sweet, realistic and sexy as hell. Alia is a level-headed heroine who needs to face her own demons. It’s good to see her gradually let go of her issues. Nate is hot! He’s sensitive, hot, well-rounded. Hot. (Ok, you get the point.) I honesty couldn’t put the book down until I finished.

What you might hate: Nada – this is a military romance – so I guess if it’s not your thing, then that may be an issue. I don’t read a lot of stories set in this world, but the ones I have read are so well done that I enjoyed them immensely. It’s a very human story, set in a world that felt authentic.

Rating: 5/5 – for a thoughtful, romantic and insightful story. Definitely recommend it!

Fight or Flight by Samantha Young

cover142255-medium

Book: Fight or Flight

Series: a standalone

Author: Samantha Young

Release date: 9 October 2018

Main characters: Ava Breevort, frequent flyer, who’d rather be anywhere other than Arizona. Caleb Scott, a fellow passenger and Ava’s soon-to-be-nemesis.

Blurb:

The universe is conspiring against Ava Breevort. As if flying back to Phoenix to bury a childhood friend wasn’t hell enough, a cloud of volcanic ash traveling from overseas delayed her flight back home to Boston. Her last ditch attempt to salvage the trip was thwarted by an arrogant Scotsman, Caleb Scott, who steals a first class seat out from under her. Then over the course of their journey home, their antagonism somehow lands them in bed for the steamiest layover Ava’s ever had. And that’s all it was – until Caleb shows up on her doorstep.

When pure chance pulls Ava back into Caleb’s orbit, he proposes they enjoy their physical connection while he’s stranded in Boston. Ava agrees, knowing her heart’s in no danger since a) she barely likes Caleb and b) his existence in her life is temporary. Not long thereafter Ava realizes she’s made a terrible error because as it turns out Caleb Scott isn’t quite so unlikeable after all. When his stay in Boston becomes permanent, Ava must decide whether to fight her feelings for him or give into them. But even if she does decide to risk her heart on Caleb, there is no guarantee her stubborn Scot will want to risk his heart on her…

Why you should read it: I truly look forward to cracking open a book by Samantha Young – I always know it’s going to be compelling, soulful and intelligent. Fight or Flight was no exception. Don’t let the cute cover fool you – there’s plenty of depth and pathos to this story. It’s quite unlike anything I’ve read recently. Ava is dealing with a lot. Grief, guilt, personal identity crisis. You name it, she’s dealing with it, with only her friend Harper to help. Enter Caleb Scott. A gruff, unlikeable and rude character. I didn’t know what to make of him. We’re all used to the hero being a bit of a dick at times, but Caleb was something else. He’s so surly and careless of Ava’s feelings that it took me a while to want them to be together! The chemistry was off the charts however, so I could believe the attraction between them. The narrative was strong and the story unfolded at a steady pace. Samantha Young is a very masterful writer – she doesn’t drag her feet or drag out a story.

What you might not like: Caleb – for me, he was the main obstacle in this book. He has a backstory of course – one that will surprise you, but he’s so unpleasant at times that I really felt for Ava and thought she should just leave him to his own misery! Of course, there is redemption in the end – I just feel that poor Ava had to work for it.

Rating: 3.5/5 for an engaging, entertaining yet serious story about forgiveness, moving on and grief. The dialogue and the book’s premise were refreshing.

Blog tour: The Evolution of Man by Skye Warren

unnamedBook: The Evolution of Man

Series: Trust Fund #2

Author: Skye Warren

Release date: 25 September 2018

Main characters: Harper St Claire, Sutton Mayfair, Christopher Bardot.

Plot:

Harper has a fight on her hands. She desperately wants to save the town’s half-demolished library and her mother from failing health in equal measures. If only her former stepbrother and the love of her life would get out of her way so she could achieve her goals.

Bound to two men in an obsessive game of cat and mouse, Harper is both prey and predator who must gain the upper hand if she doesn’t want to lose it all.

She has control of her trust fund at long last, but she soon finds that none of her problems can be solved with money…

Why you should read it: After having read Survival of the Richest I was very excited to begin The Evolution of Man. This author always has delivered in the past so I was prepared for a well-rounded story and also some dark, erotic romance. So, did it deliver? It’s sometimes hard to tell how a final published book will pan out from an uncorrected arc. The version I received gave a good indication of what the final version would be like. The plot, the evolving story and the character development were all there. The interactions between Harper and Sutton, Harper and Christopher are tense, twisted and very sexy – the chemistry picks up where we left it in book 1. On the sexy times front, I have no complaints!

What you may not like: Harper is a heroine with a lot to deal with. Her mother is terminally ill, she’s stuck in a ménage à  trois with two emotionally unavailable men. Therefore, I had plenty of sympathy for her. However, in numerous parts of the book she verged on whiny to the point that if she mentioned saving the library one more time I was going to throw my Kindle away! Also, she was immaturely stubborn when it came to her personal safety. At times, she behaved like a 12 year old. Her internal monologue was repetitive and the plot stalled for quite a while.

The book’s pacing was also a problem for me. For chapters and chapters, Harper was struggling to decide what she wanted from life, then suddenly towards the end of the book it was all wrapped up with no explanation of how we got to this point. I wanted to know what happened to both of her suitors. And I’m very disappointed that this did not happen. (I’ll have to read bonus content at a later date to get this information.) It felt rushed, it felt unfinished and it felt inconsistent. I’m really sad about this as I mentioned before, this is one of my favourite authors and she delivers again and again. Perhaps I had unfair and unattainable expectations – that’s on me.

Rating: It was too choppy (plot-wise) for my liking – I couldn’t keep up with the changes in mood of each character and was confused by the back and forth to be honest. For this reason I’m giving it somewhere between 2.5 and 3/5.

Blog tour: Wounded Hearts by Julia Sykes

F81F1D1E-8D67-4A06-8FEE-32286ECCF0D8Book: Wounded Hearts

Series: Wounded series #1

Author: Julia Sykes

Release date: 31 July 2018

Main characters: Addison Burke, successful author, dealing with life’s challenges. ‘Scott’ the enigmatic man who keeps entering and exiting her life.

Blurb:

It was supposed to be one wild night in Nashville. Another night flirting with strangers; another night pretending I wasn’t desperately lonely. I met a man with pain in his eyes and lies on his lips. A man even more isolated and damaged than I was. For one passionate night, we held together the broken pieces of each other’s souls.

When he shows up in my life months later, it can’t be coincidence. I don’t even know if he gave me his real name, but I crave to learn more about the enigmatic man who set my body on fire. He told me he does things that haunt him to keep people like me safe. He carries the weight of the world on his shoulders and terrible secrets in his heart.

Indulging in our intense connection could leave me more broken than ever, but I can’t help hoping we might find a way to heal each other.

I thought I no longer believed in soulmates, but this damaged, scarred man could be my happily-ever-after.

Why you should read it: I read Wounded Hero, this story’s prequel and it may have been short, but it made maximum impact! I was drawn to Addison and Scott’s personalities – I liked that they were both imperfect and sad and lonely. It made me want to know more. In Wounded Hearts, we get to know plenty more about Addison – we’re given clues as to why she’s constantly on the move, why she can’t settle. I felt that I understood her loneliness much better. Scott remains an enigma – he is masterful at deflecting, so we don’t know why he keeps blowing hot and cold. I was desperate to find out – I didn’t realise there’s another book to come – so I was a little miffed to get to the end and still have more unanswered questions. Guess I’ll just have to be patient until Mended Hearts comes out! There was a lot I enjoyed about this book – I loved how the author evoked the atmosphere of York – if you’ve ever been (it’s one of my favourite cities on earth) then you’ll understand how accurate a depiction it was. It was an intelligent story – one I’m keen to stick with.

What you may not like: Not sure – I mean, I was hoping to get some closure at the end of this book – but that didn’t happen. I’ll wait, because it’s so well written, and I’ll overlook the slight cliffhanger. If you’re not a fan of messy characters, then this one may pose a few problems for you – but it intrigued me.

Rating: 4/5 for an engaging, sexy and sensitive read. I loved it.

Blog tour: Survival of the Richest by Skye Warren

A woman gazes at the camera. She is dressed in red underwearBook: Survival of the Richest

Series: Trust Fund #1

Author: Skye Warren

Release date: 12 June 2018

Main characters: Harper St. Claire, heroine of the story, who’s tired of being controlled. Christopher Bardot, her former stepbrother and the only thing standing in the way of her accessing her trust fund. Sutton Mayfair, Christopher’s business partner and love rival.

Blurb:

An heiress without a cause.
Two billionaires determined to claim her.
And a war fought on the most dangerous battlefield – the heart.

My story starts with a plunge into the cold water of Manhattan’s harbor.

A strong hand hauls me back onto the deck of the luxury yacht. Christopher was supposed to be my enemy. Instead he protects me with fierce determination.

That should have been my happily ever after, but then Sutton appeared – ruthless and seductive. He doesn’t care that my heart belongs to someone else, because he’s determined to win. No matter the cost.

It’s an impossible choice, but I can’t have them both.

Why you should read it: Oh my goodness! As you may know, I’m a huge fan of Skye Warren’s work, and Survival of the Richest is no exception. I don’t often bother with love triangles, but I was really in the mood for one and then I heard about this book. So timely! The plot was engaging and full of twists and turns – Harper is in a difficult situation thanks to her controlling father and rather than roll with it, she’s prepared to fight every step of the way. I liked her spirit and her sense of fun. The chemistry between her and Christopher bubbled away in the background, but it was the brash, southern charm of Sutton who grabbed my attention. He was wicked and sexy and all those things you should probably stay away from if you want a quiet life! Yes, I want to know what his deal is and what his endgame will be. I thought this was a standalone, so I was surprised when it ended the way it did. Thankfully, there won’t be long to wait for The Evolution of Man, which is out in August – so not too long to wait.

What you may not like: This book isn’t a typical love triangle. Then again, Skye Warren isn’t your average or typical writer. There’s always a side of danger or darkness in the background. If that’s not your bag and you’re averse to a heroine enjoying the company of more than one man at a time, then this book may overload your puritanical senses! I thoroughly enjoyed not knowing who, if anyone, she’ll choose. Or will she have a choice?

Rating: 5/5 – I want more and I want it now! Please.

UNDONE high res coverBook: Undone

Series: House of Sin #3

Author: Elisabeth Naughton

Release date: 5 June 2018

Main characters: Natalie Salvatici, Luc Salvatici.

Blurb:

Behind the doors of the House of Sin, no one is ever safe…

I love him. It’s the only truth that matters now.

I’ve cast my old life aside and given myself fully to his wants and desires, to the fire he alone ignites inside me. And together, we’ve found strength and salvation in each other.

But there are evil forces, people who see me as a threat that must be undone. I trust that our love can withstand any test, but I can’t ignore the growing shadows lurking beyond our door.

Because I understand now that those shadows are not waiting to destroy me as I once feared. They’ve come for him. To steal him away from me for good. And to finally and completely engulf him in a sinister world he’s eluded for so long.

In the inescapable darkness of the House of Sin…

Why you should read it: This book is certainly not boring! There are so many twists and turns, misunderstandings between Luc and Natalie – while they still struggle to communicate – not the mention the plotting and scheming done by Luc’s family. It left me breathless – the newlyweds are really put through the ringer in this book. There was barely any respite. I enjoyed the developing characters of Natalie and Luc, they became more and more solid in my mind. I was thoroughly invested in their story. Crazy as it was! The chemistry levels between the pair remained off the charts and their passion leapt off the page – without getting too over the top. The Italian wasn’t bad – it merged quite well into the English and wasn’t too distracting. For the most part it was correct, which was a relief, as it has been done very badly in other books I’ve read.

“You are my life, Natalie James. The very reason my heart beats. And I will love you across the ages. Nothing will ever change the way I feel. Nothing.”

What you might not like: As I said, there’s A LOT going on for Natalie and Luc – it never ends. There was one point when I asked myself whether I could take another kidnapping! Natalie always seemed to be in the wrong place at the wrong time – and with disastrous consequences! This many twists and turns made it quite a long book, which is not a problem, but I did experience drama fatigue nearing the last third of the book. Perhaps certain plot-lines were tied up a little too neatly (if I’m seriously nitpicking) for my liking? Though, that’s better than a gaping hole in a plot.

Rating: 3.5/5 for a satisfying end (if somewhat hard to come by) to the story and a seriously sexy read. It was thrilling and consistently good across the series.

Sin by Minx Malone and Nana Malone

A man with toned abs and muscles lies seductively on a bed.Book: Sin

Series: Sin Duet #1

Authors: Nana Malone, Minx Malone

Release date: 29th May 2018

Main characters: Matthias, mysterious young man and a deadly genius. ‘Gemma’, seemingly a damsel in distress, but who is she really?

Plot:

Matthias’s middle name might as well be ‘mystery’ because not only can he hack into just about anywhere, he’s also very good at handling himself and those he cares about. In fact, he’s pretty deadly.

He tries not to let his past dominate him and stays focused on his life now with his colleagues, who are a second family to him. It’s his job to keep everyone safe and that’s exactly what he intends to do.

When Gemma walks into his life, beaten and bruised, he springs into action. Something about her awakens and amplifies his protective instincts. So much so, that he doesn’t think he’ll be able to let her go when she heals.

Gemma Boyd has a mission – get in, get the target, get out. Only, once she’s in, she’s not sure she wants to get out…

Why you should read it: Wow! What an intriguing and sexy read! Matthias is complicated – full of fury and in many ways, he hasn’t fully developed as an adult. Inside his head is pretty scary, but the way in which he tries to keep his demons at bay, will wrench at your heart. He could have had a completely different life, but for a run of bad luck. There’s plenty of testosterone flying around in the book, and if you’ve the Shameless series, you’ll be familiar with Matthias’s friends. They’re all extremely manly and capable and you wouldn’t mess with them!

What you may not like: This is a duet and it’s very exciting, but being left hanging on a particularly steep cliff is not every reader’s favourite thing. My advice? Binge read the entire duet once it releases! (Only because I loathe waiting for books!) Besides the waiting, (it’s really not a massive wait, only a week or so) there was nothing I didn’t enjoy about this book. It has a virgin, virile male, who’s very complex but does have feelings beneath the depths. Gemma’s backstory will grip you and you’ll enjoy the push-pull dynamic they have.

Rating: 5/5 for an exciting read – I want more and I want it NOW!
