BOOK REVIEW: Winter Tales by Tiffany Reisz

Yes! This is my first seasonal review of the year – believe me, this anthology sets the bar HIGH! Fans of the Original Sinners world will rejoice to pick up this collection of short stories. It’s like meeting up with old friends. Some stories may be familiar to you, others a delightful discovery, but they’re all delectably wicked!

Book: Winter Tales

Series: The Original sinners

Author: Tiffany Reisz

Release date: 19 November 2019

Blurb:

In DECEMBER WINE, the long-awaited story of Nora Sutherlin’s first meeting with Nico can finally be told. Nora enlists her editor (and sometimes lover) Zach Easton on a mission to track down Kingsley’s long-lost son. Nicolas “Nico” Delacroix turns out to be young, strikingly handsome, and very French. He wants nothing to do with his father…but everything to do with Nora.

This special holiday-themed collection also includes the novellas POINSETTIA, THE CHRISTMAS TRUCE, and THE SCENT OF WINTER (previously available only as ebooks). A bonus short story starring Søren rounds out the WINTER TALES anthology.

Why you should read it: Well, presumably you’re a fan of the Original sinners? This kinky band of outsiders who, over the years have formed a tight-knit community of their own? Fans of Nora’s mischief, Kingsley’s charm and Søren’s… well, Søren-ness, will adore these vignettes into these characters’ lives. We ping back and forth through different time periods and one thing doesn’t change – Reisz’s ability to weave intricate stories, giving each and every character such depth, providing humour and pathos.

What you may not like: Die-hard fans will love these stories – of that I’m sure. I was laughing in places, then touched by those feels in others. I was glad to finally see some vulnerability from Søren – I felt like he was actually giving something back. He receives so much adoration and devotion from Nora, Kingsley and everyone else he encounters, but gives/emotes only sometimes. In these stories I finally got a glimpse into the inner workings of Marcus Stearns. He has an actual heart – and it beats hard and strong for those he loves!

Rating: 4/5 for a delightful, seasonal read. It warmed my heart… and other places!

BLOG TOUR REVIEW: Tell Me Everything by Amy Hatvany

Book: Tell Me Everything

Author: Amy Hatvany

Series: a standalone

Release date: 5 November 2019

Main characters: Jessica and Jake Snyder, a happily married couple, exploring their sexual boundaries.

Plot: Jessica Snyder has a great life. She’s found a lasting love in her second marriage, she has great kids and even manages a somewhat cordial relationship with her ex-husband and his new family. Her business is booming and she couldn’t ask for more.

When she and her husband Jake decide to explore inviting a third party into their sex lives, there’s way more excitement than trepidation. Their honesty with each other has created a rock-solid foundation that nothing can possibly shake. Or can it?

When a stupid lie of omission leads to more lies, Jessica and Jake’s relationship threatens to crumble to rubble, when a vengeful acquaintance sets out to ruin Jessica’s life. Will the pair be able to find their way back to each other, or will the fallout destroy the whole family?

Why you should read it: This was an intriguing and thought-provoking story. It was obviously sexy as hell – the scenarios between Jessica and Jake, for one, but also the scenes between Jessica and the other men were off the charts hot. I enjoyed the lack of shame in the story. The author has a fervent stance against shaming women for liking sex and owning their sexuality and it is a powerful message. I liked the main characters and their openness to self-acceptance.

What you may not like: There’s not a whole lot I disliked about this book. The plot was solid, the characters were interesting, but I’ll admit to wanting to wring Jessica’s neck for her decision to withold certain bits of information from Jake. It was quite out of character for her, and it was so clear that it was going to blow up in her face!

Rating: 4/5 for a very thoughtful look at marriage, relationships and all the elements that shape us. I liked the book’s message and would love to read more from this author.

COVER REVEAL: Tell Me Everything by Amy Hatvany

perf5.500x8.500.indd

“A sizzling, squirming, thought-provoking story of female growth.”

– Caroline Kepnes, New York Times bestselling author

Tell Me Everything, a provocative do-not-miss novel from author Amy Hatvany, is coming November 5th and we have the gorgeous cover!

A happily married couple. A dance with a stranger at a bar.

One night—one seemingly insignificant choice—can change everything.

Jessica and Jake Snyder love each other, and their life together. Successful in their chosen careers, they reside in the picturesque, though at times stifling, Seattle suburb of Queens Ridge as they parent teenagers Ella and Tucker.

As so often happens in marriage, their romantic life falls casualty to busy schedules and repetitive routine, until one night, a stranger asks Jessica to dance. On a whim, Jake urges her to say yes, saying that he wants to watch this other man touch her, something that surprises Jessica by arousing her like never before. A door opens for them then, into a realm of exploration neither of them knew existed.

They create rules to protect their marriage, and are thrilled when their relationship is strengthened and enriched by deeper levels of communication and trust brought about by this exciting, but taboo behavior. That is, until Jessica keeps a secret from Jake and embarks on a tryst with an intriguing man from her past, who, when she tries to end things between them, decides to seek revenge.

What happens after that will threaten to destroy their world—and them.

A juicy and insightful look into the shifting definition of modern marriage and the limits placed upon female sexuality, TELL ME EVERYTHING will make you question everything you thought you knew about what constitutes marital bliss, and keep you turning pages into the night.

About Amy Hatvany

Amy Hatvany headshot, high resolution

Amy Hatvany graduated with a degree in Sociology only to discover most sociologists are unemployed. Soon followed a variety of jobs – some of which she loved, like decorating wedding cakes; others which she merely tolerated, like receptionist.

In 1998, Amy finally decided to sell her car, quit her job, and take a chance on her passion: writing books.

Her background in sociology inspires and informs much of her work as she tackles timely and controversial issues in her novels including mental illness, domestic abuse, and alcoholism. She is published by Washington Square Press/Atria Books, and has been both a Target Book Club and Costco Pennie’s Pick.

Amy spends most of her time today with her kids and her second and final husband, Stephan. (Seriously, if this one doesn’t work out, she’s done, kaput, no more husbands!) When Amy’s not with friends or family, she is most likely reading, cooking, or zoning out on certain reality television shows. She eagerly awaits Bravo auditions for the cast of “Top Author.” (“Quick Edit” instead of “Quick Fire” Challenge? C’mon, producers! That’s gripping television!)

Blog Tour: Concerto by Skye Warren

Book: Concerto

Series: North security #2

Author: Skye Warren

Release date: 14 May 2019

Main characters: Samantha Brooks, violinist and child prodigy who is learning to stand on her own two feet. Liam North, former guardian, sometimes lover, the man who wants to protect her from anyone who would harm her. Even himself.

Blurb:

Samantha Brooks stands onstage as the curtain rises. Her dreams are coming true. She doesn’t know her nightmare is coming too.

The spotlight lands on Samantha Brooks. Years of practice build to the opening night of a global tour. She plays her heart out, but there are darker forces underneath the stage.

There are eyes watching from the wings.

Liam North fights to keep her safe with every weapon he owns. She’s his greatest pride — and his greatest weakness. The danger comes from somewhere no one expected. Betrayal threatens to destroy everything he’s built. His business. His family. His life.

When the curtain falls, only one of them will be left standing.

Why you should read it: Oh my goodness! This book was anything but filler! You know how sometimes with a trilogy, books 1 and 3 have you hooked, but book 2 just kind of ambles along and doesn’t seem to know its purpose? Yeah, that didn’t happen with this book I’m happy to report! Samantha is no longer the wide-eyed ingenue she was in book 1. She’s got a lot to learn – she’s only 18, but she’s determined to take responsibility for her own actions and her love life. She wants Liam and knows he wants her too, but he won’t let the possibility of their being together take root. He’s the flip flop in the book – he’s made weak by her but leads her a merry dance by blowing hot and cold. She correctly calls him on it and reacts with maturity.  She doesn’t weep and wail or stomp around throwing tantrums. She’s young (as I have said) but she really starts to come into her own in this book. We learn a lot about her and also more about the state of Liam’s mind. I understand his reticence to take things further, but I wanted to slap him at times for his contrary ways.

What you may not like: Well, this wouldn’t be a Skye Warren book if it didn’t raise eyebrows or make you take a close look at uncomfortable dynamics. The age difference may not sit well with you, (I’m conflicted about it) but I tell myself this is fiction. FICTION. The intrigue happening in the background was too delicious and I found myself engaging equally with that plot and the other members of the performance troop, than simply the main love story. The plot has still lots of questions that remain to be answered and I want to find out ALL THE ANSWERS!

Rating: 4/5 for an intriguing and exciting book 2 – I cannot wait for Sonata to finally get some closure!

Blog tour: Overture by Skye Warren

FD39F92C-E13A-42A6-83D9-B932D2E50B2EBook: Overture

Series: North Security #1

Author: Skye Warren

Release date: 19 February 2019

Main characters: Samantha Brooks, violinist and prodigy about to embark on her first tour. Liam North, her guardian, and the only one who can tell her the truth about her past.

Plot: Samantha Brooks is about to turn 18 and with her birthday will come not olny emancipation and adulthood, but also some answers about who Liam is to her and why he became her guardian. Their relationship is civil; Liam has always seen to her needs but no-one has ever shown her the love she needed. Not even the father she barely remembers.

Despite his frosty demeanour, Liam is all Samantha has, and lately, she’s been thinking of him as less of a guardian and more of a potential lover. He continues to keep her at arm’s length but she intuits that he is fighting the attraction that burns between them. Will he ever give in to temptation, or will he let shame and guilt stand between them..?

Why you should read it: I thought I knew what I was getting with this book. A young girl/woman, an older man, a taboo-ish story of characters struggling with their attraction. It is that kind of story, but as ever, Skye Warren adds in an extra layer or two. There’s intrigue – both in Liam’s family and in Samantha’s past. Exploring just how the two may be linked kept me reading and turning the pages.

It was an intriguing narrative that introduced the characters to the reader. I’ll be very interested to see just how the main characters will develop and also the peripheral characters in the story – they’re equally interesting.

What you may not like: Well, Samantha is pretty young and Liam is not. If that is likely to make you uncomfortable, I would sit this one out. However, if you’re a fan of Skye Warren, you’ll no doubt know what you’re getting into. I just want to read the next instalment posthaste! Beware cliffhangers – for they will drive you insane!

Rating: 4/5 for a story that developed slowly, but sucked me in and made me want more.

Blog tour: Undone by Elisabeth Naughton

UNDONE high res coverBook: Undone

Series: House of Sin #3

Author: Elisabeth Naughton

Release date: 5 June 2018

Main characters: Natalie Salvatici, Luc Salvatici.

Blurb:

Behind the doors of the House of Sin, no one is ever safe…

I love him. It’s the only truth that matters now.

I’ve cast my old life aside and given myself fully to his wants and desires, to the fire he alone ignites inside me. And together, we’ve found strength and salvation in each other.

But there are evil forces, people who see me as a threat that must be undone. I trust that our love can withstand any test, but I can’t ignore the growing shadows lurking beyond our door.

Because I understand now that those shadows are not waiting to destroy me as I once feared. They’ve come for him. To steal him away from me for good. And to finally and completely engulf him in a sinister world he’s eluded for so long.

In the inescapable darkness of the House of Sin…

Why you should read it: This book is certainly not boring! There are so many twists and turns, misunderstandings between Luc and Natalie – while they still struggle to communicate – not the mention the plotting and scheming done by Luc’s family. It left me breathless – the newlyweds are really put through the ringer in this book. There was barely any respite. I enjoyed the developing characters of Natalie and Luc, they became more and more solid in my mind. I was thoroughly invested in their story. Crazy as it was! The chemistry levels between the pair remained off the charts and their passion leapt off the page – without getting too over the top. The Italian wasn’t bad – it merged quite well into the English and wasn’t too distracting. For the most part it was correct, which was a relief, as it has been done very badly in other books I’ve read.

“You are my life, Natalie James. The very reason my heart beats. And I will love you across the ages. Nothing will ever change the way I feel. Nothing.”

What you might not like: As I said, there’s A LOT going on for Natalie and Luc – it never ends. There was one point when I asked myself whether I could take another kidnapping! Natalie always seemed to be in the wrong place at the wrong time – and with disastrous consequences! This many twists and turns made it quite a long book, which is not a problem, but I did experience drama fatigue nearing the last third of the book. Perhaps certain plot-lines were tied up a little too neatly (if I’m seriously nitpicking) for my liking? Though, that’s better than a gaping hole in a plot.

Rating: 3.5/5 for a satisfying end (if somewhat hard to come by) to the story and a seriously sexy read. It was thrilling and consistently good across the series.

Blog tour – Forbidden by Elisabeth Naughton

FORBIDDEN high res coverBook: Forbidden

Series: House of Sin #1

Author: Elisabeth Naughton

Release date: 24 April 2018

Main characters: Natalie James, woman on a mission to find out how her best friend died; Luciano Salvatici, enigmatic CEO of Covet, a successful magazine and keeper of dark secrets.

I’ll leave tomorrow if that’s what you really want me to do, Luc. I won’t fight you on it. I just hope…” She hesitated and looked down at where I held her, but when her eyes slid back to mine, I saw the dampness in her gaze. “I hope someday someone makes you see yourself the way I see you. I’m just sorry it couldn’t be me.” She gently pulled her hand from my grip, and I let her because I suddenly couldn’t breathe.

Plot: Natalie James has taken time out of her safe, small-town existence to find out exactly what drove her friend Elena to a drug overdose. Something doesn’t add up – she knows her friend and drugs were never her vice.

She plans to infiltrate Covet, the magazine Elena worked for, but she has to get through to the intractable Luciano Salvatici first. He’s intimidating, dismissive and he sees right through her ruse. She’ll have to find another way. But how? Natalie’s mission will take her on a mysterious and possibly deadly journey and she will have to get closer to Luc. Does she stand to lose more than her heart in such a dangerous game of cat and mouse?

Why you should read it: I love Elisabeth Naughton – she really does romantic suspense so, so well. This story is full of intrigue, sex and adventure. I really didn’t know where the story was headed and was happy to give myself over to the storyline completely. The dual point of view narrative gave a greater insight into each character and the reader is left in no doubt about who they are as people. I was rooting for them but I couldn’t see how they would extricate themselves from the tangled web of deceit.

What you might not like: This is a trilogy. You should know this going in. There will be cliffhangers and a slight gap in between book releases. If you don’t mind waiting then start this series as soon as possible! It’s steamy, it’s sweet and it’s suspenseful. If not, maybe wait until the series is complete (June 2018).

Rating: 4/5 for a strong start to the series. I have questions, I want to know what will happen next and I’m totally invested in Natalie and Luc.

**WARNING!**

This book is very sexy, very dark, and very addictive! Contains consensual kink and a dark and dominant hero with a dangerous secret. The release schedule is as follows:

Blog tour – Dirty by Callie Hart

40DAE9F0-72DD-4D7B-B0B7-01CBA465CBBABook: Dirty

Series: Dirty Nasty Freaks #1

Author: Callie Hart

Release date: 30 March 2018

Main characters: Sera Lafferty, determined heroine who has an important wedding to get to. Felix ‘Fix’ Marcosa, not your average hitman, and trouble with a capital T.

Plot: Sera Lafferty has a wedding to get to – it’ll be a long drive, but she could make if the weather would just cooperate. Far from getting better, when a freak storm settles on the small town she’s in, she has no choice but to seek refuge in the town’s only motel. Far from impressed with the rundown establishment, she’s even less impressed when she has to share the motel’s last room with a surly stranger. He’s rude, sarcastic and hellbent on pushing her buttons it seems. He’s huge and also sexy as sin…

Felix ‘Fix’ Marcosa is on a mission. He hasn’t got time to deal with the sparky woman in front of him. She’s not his type anyway. He was supposed to be in and out and on to the next job – but the weather put pay to that. With no choice but to take shelter for the night, Fix decides there’s no reason not to get to know Sera a little. What harm could it do? By morning they’ll be back on the road and on their separate journeys once more. A little conversation and a lot of tequila later and the clear cut plan has become a little more complicated…

Why you should read it: I confess that I didn’t do my homework with this book – I saw that it was written by Callie Hart and that was all I needed to know – I was definitely reviewing it. I didn’t know it was only part 1 in the story – what a fool I was! I devoured the book and now I’m like – how long do I have to wait for part 2?! How many parts are there to this series? Will it be an epic ride like the Blood and Roses series, or a duet? I have so many questions! Anyway, I digress. I loved this book’s energy. Fix is filthy and inappropriate, while Sera is funny, foulmouthed and has a lot of moxie. Some of their dialogue made me laugh out loud – especially when they get to the wedding – I won’t spoil it for you. The chemistry was hot, hot, hot and I enjoyed the depths of the characters. You won’t believe Fix’s back story – I was completely enthralled by him and his past life.

What you may not like: If you’re a Callie Hart fan, like a bad man and a strong heroine, you should be happy with this. If you don’t like a hero with a dirty mouth (not kidding, the man is filthy) then you might struggle. Sera gives as good as she gets too – so if you’re sensitive to particularly bad language and graphic sexual references – maybe try a sample first!

Rating: 4/5 for one heck of a ride and a darn good story. I need closure right now – and I really hope part 2 is in the offing as soon as possible!
