Book: The Pecker Briefs
Series: Legal Affairs #7
Author: Sawyer Bennett
Release date: 17 April 2018
Main characters: Viveka Jones, animal rights lawyer, Ford Daniels, successful lawyer, her adversary in the case.
Plot: When Ford Daniels first meets Viveka Jones she’s chained to a tree that houses an endangered species of woodpecker. His client very much wants her and the neighbouring trees removed, but Ms Jones means business. Ford is instantly captivated by her and when he finds out he’s about to go head-to-head in court with her, he’s glad for the chance to see her again.
Viveka can’t help but fight for vulnerable animals. She’s made it her life mission and the red cockaded woodpecker is no exception. Her attraction to Ford will not affect the outcome of the hearing and she simply can’t resist the man, so why try?
It’s an attraction that has a limited shelf life as Ford has never had a significant relationship before, nor wanted one. They’ll keep it professional in the courtroom, but in the bedroom, all bets are off…
Why you should read it: I really enjoyed this book. Often in the stories I read there are baddies or evil exes that need to be vanquished, but this wasn’t really the case here. It was a simple tale about two people acting on a mutual attraction without all the drama. The chemistry was hot and the sexy times were lip-biting. There was plenty of entertainment and the dialogue was good.
What you may not like: If you like your romances full to the brim with angst and self denial, you’ll probably find this one a little tame! For me, it felt more like real life and featured slightly older characters who were comfortable in their own skins. It was refreshing to read actually – no crisis to drive them apart, no silly misunderstandings involving third parties. Just great dialogue and very, very sexy times.
Rating: 4/5 – for a low-drama, sweet and uncomplicated read. I liked both main characters equally. They didn’t play games or do stupid things and I was rooting for them from the beginning.
