Calling all Samantha Young fans! I was very lucky to nab a review copy of Villain, which will be out on 5 December. If you read Hero, then you’ll enjoy re-visiting some of the characters from it.
Series: Hero #1.5
Author: Samantha Young
Release date: 5 December 2017
Main characters: Henry Lexington, wealthy bachelor and Caine Carraway’s best friend. Nadia Ray, meteorologist and Boston’s tv darling.
Nadia Ray is not just a broadcast meteorologist. She’s Boston’s morning television It Girl. Successful and independent, she’s put a past she’s ashamed of behind her and is forging a future she can be proud of. However, when her new boss discovers her secret he blackmails her, intent on using Nadia’s popularity to make them the number one morning show in Massachusetts. He wants her to be part of uncovering the city’s biggest scandal – a secret billionaire Caine Carraway is hiding.
Soon Nadia is thrown into the path of Caine’s best friend: sexy, wealthy bachelor Henry Lexington. But she doesn’t encounter the dashing high society gentleman Henry is purported to be. Instead she’s faced with an insulting and defensive villain who misjudges her at every turn.
When Henry finally realizes the truth, and decides to make amends, Nadia wants nothing to do with him. But she underestimates his determination and charm and soon they find themselves embroiled in an intense, passionate affair.
An affair Nadia knows must come to an end before their feelings grow any deeper and he discovers her secrets.
After all, Henry Lexington isn’t the only one who played the part of a villain once…
Why you should read it: I swear Samantha Young gets better and better as a writer! She always creates complex and entertaining characters who are flawed and above all, human. I really enjoyed this novella, which dealt with a whole range of topical issues. Nadia is desperate to be taken seriously and judged on her merits rather than her physical assets, but, working in the industry she works in breeds entitled, misogynistic colleagues and clients. I really felt for her! Rather than fade away and suffer in silence, she showed her mettle and did her best to handle it in her own way. Nadia and Henry’s chemistry was also explosive! I liked how it evolved from downright hatred and mistrust to something else entirely.
What you might not enjoy: It is pretty short and at times, perhaps Nadia guessed some secrets about Caine Calloway a bit too neatly, but overall there wasn’t a lot to dislike about this book. It was witty, engaging and sexy as hell.
Rating: 4/5 for an entertaining read. Maybe re-read Hero again before this one. I didn’t and it took a while to get back up to speed.
