Author: Roya Carmen
Series: The Riverstone series #2
Release date: 19 January, 2017
Main characters: Ruby Riverstone, our creative heroine who is struggling to find her career path. August Hyde, reclusive hero whose life is about to be turned upside down by Ruby.
Plot: Would-be illustrator Ruby is struggling to find her niche in life. When she spots a job advert online, she’s convinced it’s the ideal role for her. Social media PA and beta reader to an author? Dream job. She doesn’t realise her boss is the enigmatic and reclusive August Hyde – who also happens to be her neighbour. His reputation for being difficult, demanding and plain weird is legendary, and as nervous as she is, Ruby is determined to succeed in her new job.
August is used to his solitude. He works, works and works some more. He rarely leaves the house and makes others come to him. He knows what the town thinks of him and he doesn’t let it bother him. Too much. When Ruby steps into his world he’s immediately drawn to her. Her liveliness, her beauty and her intelligence captivate him. Which, for a reclusive man still grieving the death of his wife, is a problem.
Ruby is drawn into August’s private little world quite quickly. By reading his work, she is granted a glimpse of his inner workings and some of his darker desires. She wants to know more, but struggles to maintain some professional distance. The lines between boss and employee are about to be blurred, then redrawn as the pair confront their attraction. Will either survive it if it all goes wrong?
Why you should read it: Oh my! I had a feeling this book would be hot and seriously fun, and I wasn’t wrong! My previous read was a pretty heavy series, so this book was just what I needed. The chemistry between Ruby and August really worked for me. There was not much back and forth, it flowed well and was light on the angst. What appealed to me was the depth of feeling both characters were dealing with. Dual points of view can be a bit hit and miss at times, but in this story it worked really well. You get fully rounded characters and a truly enjoyable story.
What you may not like: Erm…nada, rien, niente. It was pitch perfect in my opinion. Good chemistry between the characters, nicely paced. No repetitive dialogues. I loved it all. This is shaping up into a really strong series.
Rating: 5/5 for a truly exciting and sexy read. The scenes are seriously hot. Be warned.
