Series: A Cold Fury Hockey Novel #1
Author: Sawyer Bennett
Review by: Onnica
Basic story: Alex Crossman is an über-talented hockey player for North Carolina team, Cold Fury. He’s superb at what he does but the fans and his teammates dislike him due to his arrogant nature and couldn’t care less attitude. Although he wins game after game, his behaviour rubs his coach and management the wrong way. They want him to clean up his act. The way to achieve this feat? By becoming a spokesman for a drug-abuse awareness programme that will put him in the public eye and hopefully change the public’s perception of him. And it’s mandatory – if he refuses he’ll be fined a ton of money and will be benched.
Sutton Price is a social worker and is very keen to have a high-profile player to be the face of the drugs-awareness campaign. The project means everything to her, so she’s not about to put her trust in a celebrity whose commitment to the project is less than 100%. She’s not in thrall to Alex, or intimidated by his cocky exterior – his body and he piercing blue eyes however, they’re a different matter.
Alex is determined to get Sutton to mix business with a lot of pleasure. Although he’s not capable of offering her anything lasting, a quick fling is definitely on the cards and he’s committed to making it happen. Trouble is, will he be able to let her go after he gets a taste of how good they could be together?
Why you should read it: I love Sawyer Bennett! She manages to find the balance between romance, sexy times and a great plot and weaves an engaging and entertaining story. Alex is no exception – the world of hockey was so vividly painted that I felt I was watching the matches – and I know nothing about hockey! The plot moved along steadily – there was no repetitive dialogue or existential angst. Alex is a cocky bugger but once you know why, it made sense. Sutton (yes, that is her name!) is a saint. She has a heart of gold and is a worthy sparring partner to Alex.
What you might hate: Not a thing! I loved this story – it’s been sitting on my Kindle for months and I’ve only just read it – why did I wait so long! It made me laugh, it made me smile and was very romantic. It didn’t give me toothache like some books do – as I say, it strikes a great balance.
Rating: 4/5 – a fun, sexy and heartwarming story. A super-hot hero and an endearing heroine, make this a great opening to the Cold Fury series.
