Book: Love The One You’re With
Author: Lauren Layne
Series: Sex, Love and Stiletto series (#2)
Review by: Onnica
Basic story: Grace Brighton has had a rough few weeks. After finding a pair of red knickers in her bed – which most certainly didn’t belong to her – her perfect world with her longtime boyfriend Greg comes crashing down. She’s back at work after a leave of absence, newly single and determined to become a newer, better version of Grace. Grace 2.0 is now in charge and she’s sworn off men for six months in order to get her life back on track.
Jake Malone is a very ambitious, yet easy going journalist, with a serious case of wanderlust. He’s been working his way up the career ladder but feels restless in the current safe environment of Oxford magazine. He’s tired of the nine-to-five and wants to start work as the magazine’s travel correspondent. His new boss has ok’d it, but with one caveat: he has to team up with a reporter from Stiletto magazine and do a few articles on attraction. Less than impressed with the idea, but really having no choice if he’s to land his new job, Jake agrees. Jake and Grace have to go on dates, go through the motions of romance and write up their observations on who could read the other’s behaviour better. Simple. But when fact starts to muddle fiction and the assignment becomes more elaborate and complicated, who will come out on top?
Why you should read this: I absolutely love this series. If you read and enjoyed After The Kiss, then I guarantee you’ll love this one. It’s funny, it’s touching and Lauren Layne has a way of taking situations that could be super-cheesy and somehow she manages to find a way to deliver it with a wry sense of humour that makes it new. Jake is hot – he’s everything you could want in a male – he loves women, he’s well brought up and is respectful outside the bedroom. Grace is awesome – she’s likeable, a little prim perhaps, but her inner dialogue is hilarious. There’s a shortage of likeable heroines in books at the moment – sad to say, but true – so I’m always happy when I find one. I cannot wait for the next book, due out in March 2014, which will be Riley’s story.
What you might hate: Nothing about this book to hate on in my world. It was fun, it made me smile. The sexy times made me smoulder. The couple bickered and bantered like an old screwball comedy. There was no heavy angst. What’s not to love?
Rating: 4/5 for this second book in a very entertaining series – love Grace and Jake as a couple. There was real emotion here but it didn’t descend into melodrama. Another triumph for Ms Layne!
Love The One You’re With will be out on Dec 9th.
